My Design Wall is up and it is awesome! It’s been a while since I had a design wall, probably three years now, and all quilters know that it is a very handy thing to have. You know you have a good design wall if there are threads all over it….
Oh, you can’t see the threads on this pic, can you? Trust me they are there!
A few minutes after it went up on the wall it was in use, with blocks I had been working on in April when I was in Arabia:
You can’t tell on the photo, but those blocks are big – 18″! It’s going to be the biggest quilt I’ve ever made.
And then a few days later my friend Heather came around to get inspiration on how to put some blocks together. She said she’d looked at them so often that she just couldn’t see what to do with them anymore. I know what that’s like, don’t you :
We decided to arrange the big and little blocks as above and sew 2 1/4″ squares in a little checkerboard pattern as a filler. Heather went home a few hours later inspired to finish it… sometimes all it needs is a few heads and a design wall 🙂
Design walls don’t have to be a certain size or screwed to a wall. Here is a great post from Martingale with 9 ideas for design walls, some of which I have used in the past:
Do you have a design wall and what is it like? If you have posted about it in the past, just link to it in the comments, I’d love to see it!
Love your new design wall and am a bit jealous. You’ve seen my little one and my big one is a disaster, though I’m still using it. Heather’s quilt is looking good and I know exactly what she means, as I had the same problem with those embroidery blocks, which is why I took so long to finally put them together. How big is your quilt going to be again? Have a nice day out tomorrow and we’ll talk soon.
I purchased a used portable design wall a few months ago, and while it’s a little awkward in my small space, I love it! I also recently made a couple of tiny little design boards to use with 6 inch blocks. I can’t believe how wonderful they are, and how much I’ve used them already! Any design board makes life so much easier!
The wall and blocks look great Joy, looking forward to seeing the finished project. xx
I’m so jealous! I don’t have a design wall, houses over here are much smaller than yours, with smaller rooms, so whilst my sewing room is quite big, there’s not enough wall space for a design wall!
