My 2017 Quilting Goals

I must say I have been slack the past week since I finished the house, and just relaxed – watched a bit of House on Netflix and did a little bit of crochet… oh, in-between the mundane things like cleaning house, cooking and doctor’s visits for my visa.
Many of you have asked when I will be heading over to Arabia, and the answer is.. as soon as I get my visa. And when will I get my visa? Your guess is as good as mine 🙂 DH has an appointment on the 29th of Jan to show some government department some paperwork, and if that is approved then I can send the paperwork off to the embassy in Canberra. In the meantime, I have to finish my medical here and take it in to Melbourne to get stamped by the medical board. Once all that is done, I will get my visa. “Inshallah” as they say in Arabia (God Willing).
So I have been doing some thinking this week as well, trying to decide what my goals for the year are. In terms of quilting of course. Other things too, but mostly quilting.
UFOs
Obviously I need to finish some UFOs. Final count is in:
That has to be it. I swear if by any slim chance I find any more I shall toss them in the bin.
Really.
So back to finishing the jolly things… I was going to do something crazy like have a goal to finish them ALL this year…. then I decided to be more sensible and go for a “17 in 2017” idea, but someone else is doing that challenge and I really need to finish more than 17 this year… so help me out here. What shall I aim for??????
Host a Swap
I was going to try to host a block of the month, but then I decided a swap would be more fun. More on that after I finish a sample.
Explore the Fancy Stitches on my Sewing Machines
I don’t know about you, but I have wonderful sewing machines. And those wonderful sewing machines have hundreds of fancy stitches… that I never use…. So this year I want to start exploring those stitches and making more use of them in my sewing projects.
Set up my Sewing Notebook Properly
Another UFO, but a paper one… I started a sewing notebook years ago and then I think I moved countries and never looked at it again 🙂 Funny that!
So far I have some info about my embroidery module, and the Bernina foot reference guide, and some other useful information. But there is a lot more that I still want to put in there, so this year I want to work on that.
Learn how to use my Embroidery Machines
Last but not least, I want to take the time to learn how to use my embroidery machines. I have one Bernina that comes with an embroidery module, and I started playing with that before I came back to Oz last time. Since then it just sat in the cupboard. Last year I bought a new to me dedicated Embroidery machine from Susan. Of course I have been too busy to even look at this lovely new machine, so I want to put time into that this year.
My plan is to take the Elna with me in the suitcase to Arabia, and keep the Bernina here. That way I can do some work on both of them.
Well, those are my main personal quilting goals for this year. I have some quilting business goals too but that is for another day.
Please help me out with a realistic slightly crazy UFO goal, and I’d love to hear what your goals are for this year.
Hello, Joy! I have recently found you, after a desperate Google search about finishing UFOs. I am your fan for life, here in the eastern USA! I have taken a leaf from your book and am hunting down all of my UFOs (by type: quilting, cross stitch, etc.) and numbering them. I feel better already…and am making a little progress. A friend of mine said that she is adopting a “Finish Two, Start One” policy: when she finishes two UFOs, she will start a brand-new project. Perhaps your goal for this year could involve a bit of “carrot at the end of the stick”—perhaps you could make a list of projects that you’d love to start! For me, interspersing small, easily finished projects with larger ones will, I hope, keep me motivated. I do plan to start a few new ones, but I’m not sure how many UFOs to do before I feel I “deserve” that! 🙂 Please accept my best wishes for your move, and thank you for your wonderful blog. How long will you be in Arabia? Salaam aleikum!
Now when we talked last week, you told me about a challenge. Is it that you need help with your goals, because I was hoping you were going to issue me with one. I like the idea of finish 2 and maybe start 1, as above, but I really need to sort out where I even want to start. Quilting, piecing, book & patterns to publish, crochet, knitting, garden, paperwork, try pyrography? HELP!!!!!
Hope the weekend is going well & take care.
I thought I had a lot of unfinished projects, but you beat me. Can’t finish my own, so not much help to you. If you want to try your machine stitches, read my blog today.
My mind is boggled. I can’t even think of a response to this. I usually have several projects in various states of completion, so I can have a choice of machine piecing, hand work/applique/embroidery, and maybe binding to choose from when I have time to sew. When I updated my list this year, there were 12 UFO’s. Knowing how few there were really motivated me to jump in and finish them. One is now ready to be quilted, and another is getting its borders today. Good Luck!!
Oh do find some more…. if you get to 120 you will have double what I have and that would be fun!!! Just pick one up and do it without stressing about a time frame is what I am doing. I’d like to do one a week but that won’t happen because I have new projects to do so that I can have some more UFO’s for next year…. WE like to live on the edge???
Hugz
Hee hee hee hee hee 216 hee hee hee hee hee hee!! I know I am missing a couple of tubs of them somewhere because I do not have near enough with the 78 that I written down. I also need to join you on the learning to use my embroidery module since hubby gave me 2 awesome quilt patterns for Christmas. I need to take pictures of those. I need to finish at least one present per month and something month and hopefully 2. That would be 24 a year????? Ugh!!

actually I think you should commit to the 17 in 2017 and if you get more done great but atleast it will be under the 200 count…………………..well that is if you don’t start more UFO’s………….
hope the docs are all sorted asap so you can go overseas ASAP
Good on you making a list of your UFOs, I would have given up much sooner – I hope you have a lot of fun working through some of them this year – can you combine the ufos with your other goals like using your machine stitches, etc? Hope your paperwork goes through troublefree!
