At craft on Monday, I took some pictures of a few things I’ve been meaning to tell you all about. The community center, where I see my doctor, chemist and do craft, started something amazing last year and it has really taken off.
Free Food?
Yes, free food.. I do believe a lot of communities are starting this concept and I think it is a great idea. Our center has a cute little stall set up outside:
A poster explaining how the table works:
Isn’t it lovely that people who grow things themselves can share with others in the community? I know when I had a veggie garden I’d have a lot of extras that I was giving away to friends, but how awesome to give it to strangers too! If I had one now I’d be donating heaps… but since I don’t, I appreciate picking up a home grown zucchini or cucumber once every few weeks! I even grabbed two home grown peaches on Monday…
But wait, there’s more!
Community Garden
At the side of the center there are some raised garden beds, and in them… you guessed it, veggies…
I saw some kids with fresh carrots one day and asked the ladies about it…. they told me that the garden was outside and if we didn’t pick stuff every now and then, they would stop planting! My thought with these things is always – let someone else have it, there are people out there who are more needy than I am…. but for the first time on Monday I did grab some lettuce, and carrots… a zucchini and a cucumber…
The rabbit enjoyed the carrot tops 🙂
Thank you to the lovely people who are putting time and effort into growing food for the community. And thank you to all those donating items to the table. I will give back when I am able to, until then I will pick something up every now and then….
Does your community do something like this as well?
Hi Joy wow what a great idea,i will have to get you to show me where it is on monday, its such a lovely town, hope you have a lovely day.
Beauty looking vegies! Isn’t it nice that people are sharing.
What a great idea, & even though I’ve seen all sorts in UK, never much out here. Thanks for the update too on your travel plans. Take care.
What a great idea! Our town started renting garden plots in a community garden for folks to grow their own veggies. The rent is very low, and the spots were grabbed up quickly, and they have a waiting list. I don’t think the food is donated, but at least it gives folks a chance to plant that might not otherwise have any space.
those are both great ideas…. I know there is a community garden here but last time I looked it was very run down…

If we had a community garden people would destroy it……….they are bad enough with the street gardens pulling things out………..very annoying………..
lovely quilts in the posts before and after this………..not long now til you take off………..
