Pinwheels in the Desert

We went camping on the weekend. I must say it is not really my cup of tea, but Hubby loves it when I come along, so….
We drove three hours on the highway to the part of the desert the group wanted to explore. We had five cars, so we traveled in a small convoy.
As we headed west, the weather got worse. At one stage we could hardly see the car in front of us:
The rain came down pretty heavily:
But it did nicely wash all the dust away 🙂
The rain had stopped by the time we got to the edge of the dunes. We stopped so that the men could take pressure out of the tires:
They let the air out so that it is easier to drive in the sand dunes, and less likely to get stuck.
There was a digger nearby:
They use this to clear the roads because the sand is constantly trying to cover the highway….
Once the tires were down, off we went following the leader:
It is very hard to tell distances in photos, and how steep the dunes really are… but believe me, when you tip off the edge of the dune all you can see is the side of the dune until you even out down the bottom.
The next four hours was just driving…. with a little bit of excitement along the way:
Doesn’t matter how much pressure has been let out the tires, someone always gets stuck and needs help being pulled out… Some worse than others:
Again, you can’t see how steep the dune is… if he had kept trying to drive out, he would have rolled his car. I told him not to until I took a picture… 🙂 After lots of debate on how to rescue him (we decided not to leave him there), they winched him out…
In between all the dunes and getting stuck we saw some very wooly/hairy sheep:
Camels….
A lizard….
Some flowers….
And, would you believe it, some pinwheels….
Amazing, isn’t it?!
We made camp fairly late and I forgot to take pics of our setup. You can imagine it though. Tents and cars perched on top of a sand dune in the middle of nowhere. ‘Nuf said.
I spent my time at the campsite doing some embroidery and putting buttons on the pinwheels above… It was lovely and quiet… and I enjoyed chatting and stitching while DH cooked chops on the BBQ 🙂
On the way home, on the highway , we had to slow down for some camels…
Hitting one of them would be worse than a kangaroo….
We got home safe and sound and today I have washing and cleaning to do.. and play with those pinwheels a bit more… Hope you’ve all had a great weekend too!
Cool pictures!! I hope you worked on pinwheels while everyone else did all of that pulling people out of the sand.
I love those pinwheels–
and I would not have liked all that sand around me–think I would of gotten a bit dizzy from it all–but seeing all that wild life had to have been neat!!
I did get a lot done in March–but for some reason I can never get the linky thingy to work for me–
each month I do do a total of photos with my projects on a separate blog site-
called–di’scraftycottage.bs.com–I probably need to add it to my list for others to see–it is mainly for me to keep track of what I have done each month–and my store years ago was called-Crafty Cottage–
enjoy the moments–di
Looks like a real adventure with plenty of stories to tell!! Lovely to see the wildlife out there – I’m intrigued as to what the sheep eat! The desert is a great setting for your pinwheels! {Would have loved to have seen your campsite!}
I’m not a camper, either, but I’m glad you went and shared all these pics. It’s a landscape that I would never see otherwise. I think I prefer my sand along the ocean!!!
So cool, Joy. I would never think that you could drive in dunes! And all the camels, wow!! I loved seeing those, do they just wander in the desert, or where their owners with them. Wild camels? I’m so unfamiliar with Arabia.
Thank you for sharing and I love your pinwheels in the desert!!
Hi Joy wow what a wonderful post ,so much dust and I didn’t think people camped in the desert,I enjoyed this post and thankyou for sharing your part of the world xx
Thanks for a look at life in the desert & I too am wondering what on earth the sheep eat. I often don’t think they have much out here, but there is nothing I can even see in those pics. I’m not sure I could do the desert bit & as you know me well, I’m very much a green hills & seaside person. You’d have loved to have done what we did yesterday, I think. Love those pinwheels & when you get home, that’ll be one to show me. How much dust was in your clothes & elsewhere? Have a good week & take care.
good effort Joy…. the desert has it’s own beauty doesn’t it…. (says someone who has never camped there or driven through!)…

Wow, what amazing photos, and yes I too wonder what those animals eat, and a plant sending up a flower in the midst of it all. Can’t imagine living in such a barren place, I love my trees and green, and water on tap! And I am very thankful for such blessings in this country I live in.
So interesting! I bet the men love getting stuck because then they get to play with all their toys. 🙂
