I always get confused… is it yarn or is it wool? I think it changes depending on which country you come from too. So here in Holland I went to a WOOL shop… where the lovely shop lady said I could take pics of her shop and post them online 🙂
I was looking for some yarn (or wool) for my yoyos… of which I now have a jar full…
I took one yoyo with me to the shop and the lady was quite intrigued by what I wanted to do with it… I need to go back and show her one day…
But enough of yoyos and back to the wool shop…
Oooooh…. look at all those pretty colors!!!
There were lots of lovely samples, knitted and crochet…
See the bottle covered in crochet….
and the jars below? The jars below have little candles in them…
There is one in our little cottage as well:
So cute, aren’t they? I have to make me some…
Love the cute teddy and the bowl below- is it crochet or knitted do you think?
So surrounded by all this yarn goodness, what did I buy?
I was quite proud of myself… 🙂 This is what I bought:
Only two balls of pinkish wool (yarn) and one ball of very thin cotton yarn (wool) to make the stay stitches around the yoyo. Quite controlled of me don’t you think?
I tested it out on one of the yoyos while Mum was shopping at a very fancy clothes shop:
I do not do clothes shopping… so when I noticed they had a spot for me to sit, I plonked myself down and waited for Mum…
Did I mention it was a fancy clothes shop? They had free coffee and sweet nibbles… And even though we didn’t buy anything, they insisted Mum have a cuppa 🙂
This is what I love about crochet, it is so portable…
How easy to pop some yarn (wool) and a hook in my bag…. a guaranteed anti-boredom remedy.
And there ends my yarn about wool.. now I’d like to know – yarn or wool?? What do you call it?
I crochet with yarn, but it is not wool yarn. I buy the cheap acrylic yarn to make baby afghans. I use wool, that is fabric, not yarn, for applique projects. Aren’t I oh so helpful??
lovely post… Oh joy, I hate shopping too! – well except for fabric when I need it – or want it… hmmm… I love that your mum got some tea and biscuits for looking. I have to say the yarn/wool thing – I guess I always called it wool but it used to be wool… now I call it yarn more often unless it is proper wool… or it’s going to be cotton wool, polyester wool etc and that sounds wrong… so yarn fits them all… lovely colour for your yo-yo’s.

I’ve always called it wool, but these days with the ‘world wide web’ at your fingertips, it could be called anything, like yarn, wool, fibre, cotton, & all the other fancy names people come up with. I too hate clothes or grocery shopping, but could spend good amounts of time in haberdashery-type shops & antique/vintage/reclamation places. I know, weird! Take care. Ooh, just remembered, I also love book or stationary shops too. (giggle).
What a gorgeous shop! Even though I am a hopeless knitter and mediocre crocheter….I do love seeing all the beautiful yarns. Glad you had a lovely visit x
I think the teddy and bowl are crocheted. I think the Dutch like crochet a lot.
Am I right? Love the colour you picked for your yoyos.
Can’t help you about what to call it, wool or yarn, as I am not good with either. Will stick to fabric. Your pink yarn/wool would be good if you were here this weekend, for all things pink??!!
I think I always call it yarn. I do know that wool can be made into yarn, but not all yarn is made of wool.
Mum looks great!! Sat “hi” to her for me!!
I always think of going to a yarn shop where I might BUY wool yarn, but mostly I don’t. It really isn’t all that available here in the south – doesn’t get really cold. Now in Wisconsin, I could probably find yarn shops that were ALL wool yarn. =) I am interested in seeing what happens with the next rounds with you yo-yos.
You were very restrained! I love the colour you chose.
Yarn is the umbrella term for all these “threads” that you knit or crochet with. Wool is specifically from a sheep. Yarn can be silk, wool, acrylic or anything else. The teddy and bowl are crocheted, I can tell by the stitches.
I call it “wool”. Even if it’s not actually made from wool, I still call it wool. If it’s acrylic I’d probably call it “acrylic wool”. I’d never heard the word “yarn” (except as a word to mean talk but that was extremely rare as well) until I joined Ravelry. I assume it’s an American word but it seems to be becoming more common everywhere now.
I always called anything I knitted or crochetted with ‘wool’ but was told by a blogging friend that it was ‘yarn’ unless it was actually wool!! (ie yarn made from wool). So that made sense. How fun to go exploring in new towns and shops. Lots of inspiration in the yarn shop and what a fancy place to offer nibbles!
