Crochet on the Plane

I have arrived… and it’s a little bit colder here in the Netherlands than in Dubai 🙂 Luckily I brought my crochet to keep me warm…
People often wonder what they can take on the plane in the way of crafting… obviously scissors are a no no, but what about knitting needles and crochet hooks?
I always say it really depends on the day – some airlines or airline staff don’t bat an eyelid if you bring embroidery, or hexies, or knitting… but some do. I have heard they don’t like knitting needles, but don’t mind crochet hooks.. there doesn’t seem to be any logic in it to me… in any case, instead of hexies or embroidery I decided to go with crochet for this trip…
Yes, I started something new!!! My other shell crochet project is still ongoing, but I want to make myself a simple blanket that is not quite as warm as my quilt – so I went to the wholesalers and hopefully bought enough yarn to make a big enough one…
I had to get up at 4am to catch my flight, so the first few hours on the flight I managed to sleep… after that I watched Justice League and crocheted…
I love Marvel movies, but I also quite like DC… so I enjoyed the movie…
The flight was about 7 hours, so not too bad…
And all went pretty smoothly for me…….
Not for DD however………………………………………..!
When we booked the flights we were pretty happy that we managed to co-ordinate them really well… I was flying Emirates straight from Dubai to Amsterdam, DD was flying Qatar from Melbourne to Doha, and Doha to Amsterdam. I was going to arrive 10 minutes after her… perfect!
When DD got to Melbourne airport, however, her flight was delayed for two hours – which meant she couldn’t get her connection in Doha, so they changed her flights to: Melbourne – Doha, Doha – Brussels, Brussels – Amsterdam. And she was going to arrive 3 hours after me….
By the time I landed in Amsterdam, she was almost in Brussels………….. and that is where things got a bit chilly…. and she got stuck for 3 hours…. They couldn’t take off because the runway was covered in snow and there was ice on the wings, so they had to wait for the ice clearing machines to melt the ice….
They had just cleared the ice and were about to take off, when someone fainted and had to leave the plane… so then they needed to find her luggage… and in the meantime the wings iced up again!!!!
So they started the whole process all over again!
After me waiting 6 1/2 hours at the airport in Amsterdam, she finally arrived.…. all the flights after hers from Brussels were cancelled, so I had visions of her being stuck there… thank goodness that didn’t happen!
We finally made it to the hotel in Rotterdam at 9.30 pm… a bit later than expected!! As you can imagine we slept well!!
The next day we just relaxed… had a nice hot chocolate downstairs in the cafe…
While we enjoyed the view…
And I had to embarrass my daughter by taking a pic of my crochet in the snow…
This yarn is called Moya, is 100% cotton and made in South Africa…
And so that has been my adventure for the past few days….
Today is another relaxing day, before two busy days coming up for us. Tomorrow we will get the key to DD’s apartment, and then move her in the day after… we have linen to buy, bank accounts to open, and all sorts of other things… but at least I have my hooky to keep me sane….!
So Wonder Woman is such an apt nickname for you!!!! Hugs & best wishes for your course Elizabeth!!!!!
What a trip! Glad everything worked out. Does daughter crochet to stay sane also? Nancy
Your crochet in the snow is gorgeous! Such pretty yarn. I crochet on car trips, and when I fly. It’s the only thing I can do in the car that doesn’t make me sick, so I always have a baby afghan in process. Nice and small to haul along. I’m glad you and DD finally connected, and have a chance to get rested before the real work begins. Have fun!
Great pic on the snow……. Wow she’s moving to Netherlands……
Have a lovely time, sounds like you will be busy. The snow looks lovely and a great backdrop for a photo of your lovely crotchet. X
Wow, now that will be a trip to remember for DD. What a contrast in weather for you from Dubai to Amsterdam!!! Our step GD arrived on Saturday & there are roadworks from our side out to Tulla & we were a teeny bit late & she was actually waiting for us. Hope all goes well with sorting everything out & she settles in to her new life & studies. Take care & huggles to you both.
Hope all the sorting goes well, and you enjoy your time together as well. We have to be at the airport at 4.15 am also when we leave on our marathon 3 plane trips!! In Melbourne at the moment, waiting, waiting……
Glad your daughter got there safely in the end. Love the colour you are using in your crochet. Hugs, xx
Thankfully all work out for your DD. Lucky you had your crochet. Love the snow pic.
Great view from the window.
What an adventure! Good thing you found the right project to pack along.
Love the pic of your crocheting in the snow! What a stressful trip for your daughter, and no fun for you either.
And so the adventure begins! Good luck DD xx
Gosh you are full of adventures!! Glad you both got thre safely in the end! Lovely crochet and a great use of your flying time. Hope you are keeping sane while helping your daughter get sorted!
Life is never dull!. Hopefully she had a good book–or 2! Glad you get a little time to rest. And I think your blanket looks lovely in the snow!!
Hi Joy oh boy what a drama for E and you and a long time for you to hang around at the airport,so glad you both had a good nights sleep and now to enjoy your stay in Holland, have heaps of fun my friend xx
Glad that is all settled – I did once ask about a crochet hook on a plane and got a very stern NO – so I just read now…but I don’t do OS trips so that is fine.
Love your snowy picture! What a to do your daughter had. I hope you are now enjoying yourselves. Boy that must have been a switch Dubai to Amsterdam!
Oh dear, poor DD. It would have been quicker for her to get the train from belgium and if i remember right, there’s a train station at amsterdam airport
