Did you know that Dutch pancakes are different than other pancakes in the world? They are not crepes, they are not hotcakes.. they are real Dutch Pancakes… and you have to get a real Dutch person to make them… or go to a real Dutch Pancake parlor like De Smickel near my cousin’s house…
I think it is safe to say that on most of our visits to Holland we have been to De Smickel with our family… it is a such a cosy restaurant, and of course the pancakes are yummy…
When you walk in you get the kind of feel of a country steakhouse…
Dutch style of course…
With a giant clog:
And smaller ones scattered around…
The kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant, and is open plan so you can watch them make your pancakes…
As soon as they saw me taking pictures, they started showing off….
It was pretty cool 🙂
The tables all have lamp shades decorated with a traditional Dutch Farmer’s Handkerchief:
Yes, very similar to bandanas… I bought a bunch last time I was here to make a quilt… another thing for my never ending to do list…
There are fun place mats on the tables that you can look at for hours…
Don’t think Wally is hiding in there…. but you never know…
And when the pancakes came…. they covered up most of it!
Those pancakes are huge! Mine was a bacon and cheese one… ooooh yummmy!
It was a very enjoyable evening with my aunt, uncle and cousin…. hopefully I’ll be back later in the year for another real Dutch Pancake 🙂
Oh, and in case you were wondering how clogs are made… here’s the process…
Time now to finish packing my suitcase and go to the airport… when I check in with you all next, I’ll should be home…..
Travel safe xx
Yet another culinary delight to add to my ‘bucket list’!
My Aunt is heading back to Europe on Friday, Mum goes to UK 4th April and will be away 6 months this time! A cousin’s wedding early April and Cliff in October with loads of sightseeing in between. There goes more of my inheritance!!!!! Linton P & Q has folded. Brenda is hosting a catch up session for thr group this Saturday. Should be fun.
Happy travels!
