We were also in walking distance to the 9/11 Memorial… so after the Brooklyn Bridge we headed in that direction…
We stopped along the way for lunch and I had a Manhattan Bagel:
Pretty yummy – it had cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato and red onion…
Not sure what made it typically “Manhattanish” but it was nice 🙂
A bit more walking and we reached the memorial…
I don’t think any of us will forget where we were on that day…
I was in Australia when I heard the news and turned on the tv to watch the horrific footage of the airplanes flying into the Twin Towers….
DH was in the air, flying home from Arabia where he had been on a two week business trip, having just accepted a full time job there…
For those people who have visited the Twin Towers in the past, it must be a different experience going to the memorial than for those of us who have never been there before….
And of course my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones and visit this memorial site… I hope it brings some form of comfort to them..
So the memorial is made up of two pools on the spots where the towers used to be…
There is a museum and around the pools they have planted white oaks…
The pools are each about 1 acre in size, and have the largest man made waterfalls in the US. They symbolize the loss of lives and the physical void left after the attacks…
Around the pools are the names of all those who died in the attacks.. almost 3000 people.
In amongst the white oak trees they planted, is a tree called the Survivor Tree… this is a tree that was badly burned in the attack and then buried in the rubble…but it was nursed back to health and replanted…
Here it is a bit closer up…
As in Central Park there were remnants of snow…
… and signs of spring…
And a final photo of a sculpture that was saved from the rubble…
It was a sobering place to visit, but I am glad we got the opportunity…
Next blog post will be a bit more cheerful…
I sure remember that day. I was living in Tannum Sands at the time. Lovely to see your photo’s of the memorial. Hugs,xx
