It’s my turn to host the third tutorial in our:
Sew Early For Christmas – Tutorial Blog Hop!
I had a few ideas of tutorials I could do for this blog hop.. the project I finally chose to make was these fun and easy Fabric Christmas Crackers!
I don’t know about you, but every year I buy Christmas crackers… and every year the little gifts that are in the crackers get tossed or given to the op shop… I was thinking it would be much nicer and more personal to make the crackers myself – and put some more useful or yummy goodies in them….
These Christmas Crackers are soooo quick to make, you can have a ton made up for yourself or to give away as pressies before Christmas.
They actually use the same techniques as my Little Teabag Pouches… super easy… just the way I like it!
Ok, let’s get started…
Fabric Christmas Crackers Tutorial
What you need to make Fabric Christmas Crackers:
One 10″ x 6″ rectangle of fabric (see note about size below!!)
Two 16″ pieces of ribbon
One toilet roll (see note about size below!!)
This is a great scrap buster project because you only need such a small piece of fabric. I, however, used the same layer cake that I made my Little Christmas Pouches from last week:
Using a layer cake makes it so much quicker! But of course you can use scraps 🙂
NB: Not all toilet rolls are made equal!!!
Before you start this project, measure your toilet rolls!! Your toilet rolls might not be the same size as the ones I used!
Mine were 5 1/2″ and then I added a 1/2″ seam allowance to take it to 6″.
So measure yours – and then add 1/2″ to make the width of your piece of fabric.
If you don’t like the idea of using toilet rolls, you can use kitchen paper rolls 🙂 Just cut them down to the length you want, measure them and add 1/2″ to get the right size of fabric.
How to make Fabric Christmas Crackers Step 1
Our first step in making these fabric Christmas crackers is to sew a seam on either end of the rectangle:
I basically fold the fabric over 1/4″, finger press, then fold over another 1/4″, finger press, and then sew. You can iron it if it helps, or do whatever is easiest.

Next we are going to measure and make a small mark 1 3/4″ away from the seams like this:
This is for the placement of the ribbons. Do this on both ends:

*This step is Optional* 🙂
Change your mind about what color ribbon you are going to use:
Yeah, I decided pink was better than white 🙂
On with the show….
How to make Fabric Christmas Crackers Step 4
Fold each ribbon in half, pin in place and sew a few stitches over the ends to hold them in place:
How to make Fabric Christmas Crackers Step 5
Fold the fabric over and pin like this:
Make sure the ends of the ribbons are well away from where you are going to sew. It’s a bit hard to see on the photo above, but you can just see the ribbons sticking out at the edges…
Sew along the side you just pinned.
How to make Fabric Christmas Crackers Step 6
You’re done with the sewing!
Now turn the fabric inside out…
The ribbons are nicely where they need to be…
How to make Fabric Christmas Crackers Step 7
Time to put the toilet roll in the fabric tube:
Push it in till it is roughly in the middle.. then tie a bow on one side…
Fill your Fabric Christmas Cracker with goodies and tie the other bow…
With a bit of chain sewing you can have a heap done in no time…
And that is it! Quick and easy Fabric Christmas Crackers, all set for Christmas!
Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and get a chance to make some! You might want to pin some of the photos to remind you to make them later in the year… or you could make some already! If you make them now, you can take your time in finding goodies to fill them with 🙂
Thanks for visiting today and make sure you come back next week to see the last tutorial in our little blog hop which will be by the lovely Dione from Clever Chameleon Quilting!

Thanks Joy. I’ll keep this in mind for Christmas this year. Take care.
Looks like a great thing to make, especially as how we used up all the old crackers that were around, at the Christmas in July retreat.
They look gorgeous Joy, love your colour choices. X
What a cute Christmas project, thanks so much for sharing!
What a clever and cute decoration for Christmas time! Thanks!
Great to re-use year after year, and if you take out the rolls after Christmas they’ll store in almost no space. Just add new rolls next year!
Oh they are so cute! Those fabrics are really pretty too. Thank you for this fun tutorial.
Thanks, I’m going to start making some, never to early for Christmas surprises!
These would be such a hit with my family…thanks for sharing!
Fun project. Thanks for the tutorial. .
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
So cute and so easy! Great for party favors, OR for stocking stuffers. Thank you!
These look great, Joy. I love the fact that you can include items other than plastic novelties.
Such a novel idea, Joy. I think these would be a nice way to package ‘neighbour gifts’ this coming Christmas. Thank you for your wonderful idea and excellent tutorial. ^^
