Welcome to Day 4 of 31 Days of Getting Organized!
Before I tell you about my favorite storage solution for my sewing room, I just wanted to thank you all for sharing your sewing rooms with the rest of us! I love hearing about all the different spaces people sew in… because it gives me ideas 🙂 And I hope it gives you ideas too! If you haven’t read the comments from yesterday, go back and check them out if you have time… they are well worth a read!
On to my favorite storage solution… which comes from Ikea.. of course.
I love Ikea, did you know that? In fact most people I know love Ikea… I could go there every day, which if I did, I would
a. get fit (for those of you who know Ikea, it is huge!)
and
b. go broke…. because there are sooo many cool things there!
(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated in any way with Ikea. Sadly they are not paying me for my views… I just love their stuff 🙂 )
So, of the many things I love about Ikea, their Trofast storage system is the best.
It’s actually meant for kids’ rooms – and when our kids were little, their toys were in the tubs… but as soon as they grew out of their toys, I started pinching the tubs for my sewing stuff 🙂
When we arrived here at the beginning of the year, we did a trip to Ikea to get the basics for my sewing corner. Of course I bought some of the Trofast tubs, which you can see in this pic from yesterday, next to my desk:
I love the shelves that come with the tubs because it makes it easy to pull them in and out. I have them labeled with what is in them of course…
They come in three sizes, and for my sewing room here I have the smallest ones and the medium sized ones:
While it is nicest to have them in shelves, you can save money by just stacking them. I have stacked the ones I don’t use as much, and as you can see I have a bit more space under that table above for a few more.
I also have some on the top shelf of my wardrobe:
So there you go.. my favorite storage solution…. The quality is good and the price is reasonable. They have lasted much longer than other plastic tubs I have bought in the past, in fact I’ve never had one warped or broken in all the times we’ve dragged them from country to country…
Does anyone else use tubs – Trofast or other types – for their sewing room storage?
Hi Joy, Thanks for sharing again. Love your Ikea tubs. I do use plastic containers for my projects and have a couple shelves with little baskets for the different colors of material. I have never been to Ikea yet but hope to go in the future when I get a little better from this chronic fatigue. Nancy
I use lots of plastic tubs too but they are a mish mash of all sorts of shapes and sizes… one day I will get them more coordinated…. yours look great and I like those tubs as drawers… great with lids (we do get visiting mice sometimes!)

Thanks for that info on the Ikea tubs. DD uses these for her kids, but I’d never thought of it for us grownups (heehee). You know a lot of what I use, though since the move, I’ve bought some nice woven tape type baskets from The Reject Shop. They’re pretty & easy to handle & I have them in those white timber cube storage. Great to hear about all this & take care.
Alas, we don’t have an Ikea close to us but on the few times I’ve managed to get there I do agree that it’s amazing. Haven’t seen this tub storage system and seriously wish I had room in my sewing space to have them. If I could only find those two strong men who would be willing to undertake the removal of the pull out couch that’s pretty much useless I could have some great storage space.
Re the use of tubs – my sewing room has a double closet and I have it stacked floor to ceiling with various sizes of tubs and lots of dollar store plastic shoeboxes that are filled with things. So glad to have that closet space!!
I hope they are cheaper there because you are closer to Sweden! I just looked online at the price of a system like you have standing next to your sewing machine, and it’s definitely out of my budget. The closest one to me is Atlanta, and that’s over 200 miles. My son uses a lot of things from Ikea – maybe all his furniture, I’m not sure.
The tubs alone aren’t too bad, but I think I’ll be sticking with my Sterlite shoeboxes at $1 each for a while yet. I have a lot of the shoeboxes. I used to use the larger multiple-quart size drawers, but they changed how they make them, and I don’t like the new ones. The old ones went away quite a while ago to someone else. Just looking at your room makes me realize how out of control mine is right now!
I have a whole bunch of tubs from my local fish fry place-they sold the empty bins with lids to me for coins! They are still filled with fabric 20 years later!
I hear so much about Ikea – sadly it’s not in NZ (yet?) but it does seem like a great place to lose yourself! And it obviously delivers good storage systems 🙂
I use tubs, too, but my favorite storage system is a solid wood dresser I bought for $10 at a yard sale and repainted white and aqua. I made labels for the 9 drawers and use the top as a place for my small cutting mat right beside my sewing desk.
