Welcome to Day 12 of 31 Days of Getting Organized!
A long, long, time ago… in a land far, far, away…. my dad gathered together a some leather, zips, chord, and mum’s sewing machine, to create pouches to put our passports in when we travelled…. He always stressed the importance of keeping our passports safe, and he said the best place was to hang them around our necks, and then tuck them into our tops so that they were out of sight 🙂
The design he came up with was this:
It wasn’t pretty… but it was very practical…. and can you believe it, I have had it since I was 12 years old!! That would make this pouch over 35ish years old 🙂 And it is still going strong!
Over time, similar pouches started showing up in travel shops and airports… but can I say – my dad made them before they were in the shops?!
I still use that pouch every now and then, however, since I became a quilter I have also started using another style of passport holder:
These passport holders were made from a tutorial by A Spoonful of Sugar, and they are perfect for holding passports while travelling, or storing them in an organized way when you are not travelling. They are also very quick and easy to make! Make sure you check out the downloadable tutorial!
I also like the way it has the vinyl pockets on the inside…
While these passport holders are perfect for organizing and keeping track of two passports, every time I travel I think – I need to modify it so that it will fit just one passport on one side, and a place to hold the boarding pass and a few other things on the other side….
One day I will design a different one (probably by the time I stop travelling!), but in the meantime I am still quite happy with these ones…
For those of you who travel internationally, have you made passport holders, or bought any of the commercial ones out there in the travel shops?
Your dad’s passport holder looks fantastic, and so do yours. I just had mine in a zip pocket of my over the shoulder bag, and kept checking that it was still there! Only been overseas once, and not sure I will need it again. My friend had a pocket she wore around her waist all the time. Am enjoying your organising posts.
Hi Joy, Very nice passport holders. When we were traveling overseas we did not have one of those but it would have been so nice! Nancy
We don’t travel much so have let our passports lapse – never had a holder for them, but I can see how the one your Dad made would be ideal.
You have traveled so much! I do not have a passport! All my travelling has taken place within my own vast country! Very cool that you have your Dad’s leather holder!
I love your leather one…. great idea and so special. I made a lovely one but somehow I seem to have lost it and it had a space for passport, boarding pass, pen….. now I have a zippy bag and its good as always things go in it and I can find them when I am in a travel tizzy…

How perfect! And I love the fabric you chose. I’ll go check out that tutorial, now. 🙂
I don’t make things like that, and my passport has been expired for 3 years now. BUT Moira makes them for sale, and they are filled with little pockets! She calls them passport wallets.
