Welcome to the last day of the Be A Diamond Blog Hop, hosted by the lovely Carol from Just Let Me Quilt! It’s my turn today and I am sharing a quick and easy Micro Mini Diamond Quilt Tutorial!
Last year I discovered the world of Micro Mini Quilts… and made a few fun ones… I even made a Micro Mini Star with my Star Quilt tutorial – I thought it turned out really cute.
When I joined up for this blog hop, I had many ideas running through my head… big quilts, table toppers.. and then I thought – hey, I haven’t done a mini for almost a year, how about I do one for this blog hop…
So I did 🙂 And here is what I came up with:
Even though it is a super simple pattern, I thought I’d show you the steps that I went through to make it, tutorial style…
I started with a 6 1/2 inch piece of background fabric, batting a little smaller than that, and a 6″ piece of fabric for the top of the micro mini quilt…
I then traced the diamonds onto Steam-a-seam lite, then ironed and cut them out:
Once they were ironed on, I then appliqued them on with a straight stitch. I only went around each shape one time…
With normal raw edge applique I would go around each shape twice, but since this is a micro mini quilt, it won’t get washed very often, so I figured once was enough. Then I pulled the top threads through to the back and cut them off…
For the quilting, I drew a line with my handy dandy pink Friction pen along each side of the diamond:
Then using my normal foot, I quilted alongside the lines with a slightly larger stitch length…
Can you see the diamonds starting to happen in the quilting?
I usually would use a walking foot for quilting, but for this micro mini I didn’t really need to…
Oh, I didn’t pin or use adhesive spray either to make the quilt sandwich – the pieces are so small they didn’t move at all.
All quilted:
Trimmed down to 5″:
Next up is the binding. I couldn’t remember what I did last time.. so this time I cut a 1 1/2 inch binding, ironed it in half and sewed it to the micro mini quilt with an 1/8th of an inch seam:
I had plenty of binding to go around, so next time I’d probably do a smaller width, but it worked out fine…
Finished micro mini quilt was 5″:
Even though it is so simple, I think it turned out pretty cute…
If you’ve never tried a micro mini quilt before, this would be a fun one to start with. You can download the diamond templates here if you would like to give it a go.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog today for the Be a Diamond Blog Hop! And thank you Carol for hosting this fun hop!
Make sure you check out the others that are sharing their diamonds today:
Just wondering… have you made any micro mini quilts?
What a cutie patootie! I love the way the quilting created a diamond pattern too. 🙂
Cute project in my favorite colors!
That looks so cute, maybe if I made small, small things they might be all finished instead of UFO’s??
Super cute. X
I love it…. the quilting with it crossing over looks great too…

Sweet little quilt! I especially like the quilting you did–makes those diamonds float. Lovely!
Very cute
Adorable. I love your diamonds and quilting.
It’s amazing how such a small quilt piece can be as gorgeous as this…I love it! Your tutorial was great and you made it look so easy. Your photos were so pretty, too. Thank you for joining in the hop and sharing this lovely mug rug!
So sweet! I love that you appliqued it rather than pieced it. I love applique and this is sure easy enough to do.
Sweet little diamond and nice quilting too.
Love it! I like making mini quilts, but haven’t made one in a couple of years. Thanks for sharing.
Such a cute mini! Thank you for the detailed pictures of your construction.
What a sweet little diamond studded project!
Wow that is awesome. I am amazed at your binding. Anytime I do a small quilt my binding is always a hot mess.
That is one pretty diamond mug rug! Great quilting design too!
Thank you for joining the hop with your micro mini and the fantastic tutorial. I am in love with polka dots, so you had me from the beginning. Great project!
Looking good!!! And another finish! Whoot whoot!!!
Your micro mini diamond is adorable and the quilting is perfecto.
I love your micro diamond. The quilting is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing
this is stunning, and the lines of quilting show off the diamonds in perfection. Thanks so much for sharing all this with us.
I love your micro mini – the colors, the quilting – all gorgeous. Thanks for sharing our process!
SEW adorable!! (If I had thought of something like this, I might have been able to find time to participate in the Hop.)
Love your mini. The quilting really works well with this pattern, diamonds, diamonds, diamonds. I make mug rugs on a regular basis. I think some of them might qualify for the mini category,
Such a sweet little quilt that features the diamond so well. Nice!
That is a really fun diamond project!
Love how you quilted it!
What a cute micro-mini quilt. Love it! I have never made one of these. I’ve made 12 inch quilts so I’ll have to give this a try.
Very cute Joy 🙂
I swear I commented on your cute little quilt previously, but apparently the ether ate it. This is the cutest little micro quilt, love it. Hope your trip is going well.
