Who is ready for our Scrappy Mystery Quilt-a-long Step 6? I am… although my Christmas version is a little bit behind…
Today we’ll be taking our 9 patches:
and combining them with these:
So today we’ll be cutting strips and sewing… let’s start with cutting!
STEP 6 OF THE JUNE 2020 SCRAPPY MYSTERY QUILT-A-LONG!
YOU WILL NEED:
Twelve 2 1/2″ strips width of fabric, of your chosen background fabric
Cut your 2 1/2″ strips as follows:
From each strip cut:
two 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips
AND
two 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ strips
NB leave the strips folded when you are cutting, don’t open the whole strip up. This is probably obvious to most of you, but if you are a beginner and don’t know what I mean, please feel free to ask for clarification.
You will have a little bit left over after cutting the strips:
I like to go ahead and cut the rest of the strip up into usable scraps, so with these strips I cut the leftovers up into 2 1/2″ squares and 2″ squares:
And then I put them into my scrap boxes… we don’t need these for this quilt-a-long!
To summarize our cutting:
From each strip you will get TWO 6 1/2″ strips and TWO 10 1/2″ strips.
Time to sew!
Take the 9 patches and sew a 6 1/2″ strip to each side:
Yes, I pin 🙂 Edges first, then the middle.
Press towards the 9 patch:
And they will look like this:
Pin and Sew the 10 1/2″ strips to the other sides of the 9 patch:
While we usually press to the dark side, with this step it would make the corners a bit bulky, so,
Press towards the background strip:
Now you should have a pile of these:
Next step will be on Wednesday… and the last step will be next Monday, so we are nearly there!
In other news…
I am crocheting myself some leg warmers… one is done:
I was going to use the same fluffy yarn as my fluffly slippers to make the crazy look complete.. but I didn’t have any.. so I used what I have and since I am wandering around with only one on, it’s looks like I’ve injured my leg or something…. 🙂
It isn’t the 80’s anymore, so my leg warmer is no fashion statement, nor are my fluffy slippers! But they are helping keep me warm, although (for those who know me) I am still wandering around in short sleeves… My legs and feet really only get cold when I am sitting down in the evening – when I am up and about I am toasty warm 🙂
Till Wednesday…
Know what you mean…if I sit for too long, that’s it, feet are frozen…nice job on the leg warmers!
I’m thinking I might do my whites scrappy, but still white on white.
And so the mystery is growing…! Fun leg warmers – and slippers!
I’m progressing well & enjoying the experience. LOVE your instructions. I think you should stitch googley eyes on your fun slippers & they can keep an eye on you 😉
I am all caught up! Better late to the party than not at all. Looking forward to the next step soon.
I was surprised that you were making leg warmers and wondered why you’d need them and then I remembered where you live and that it’s cold there now. Hot here at the moment!
