We are at the end of our Scrappy Mystery Quilt-along! Today I’ll be giving you border options….
But first…. here are a few pics of the quilt so far….
I don’t have enough space to hang the quilt inside, so outside we went to the clothesline…
Wind and sun don’t make good photos… this one is better…
But still too many shadows.. so tried a different way…
Well, not perfect at all, but you get the idea 🙂 I will have to head out to Annie’s when it’s finished to take some pretty photos….
On to the borders!
I am not giving any measurement for this, because everyone’s tops will be a different size. The one above without sashing turned out to be 43 x 57ish 🙂
I will pop some links to tutorials on how to measure and sew binding onto quilts at the end of this post.
In the meantime, here are some border options…
Again, I don’t have enough space to hang the whole quilt, so this is the best I could do on my design wall:
Quilt as it is now, without any borders…
First border, 2 1/2″ wide white fabric:
If you don’t want it bigger, then you could stop now and either put white binding on, scrappy, or any fabric you choose really… This is what I am planning to do for my Christmas quilt since I don’t want it bigger.
If you want it bigger (and if you want to use up more scraps) you can add a scrappy border:
This is what I will be doing with the quilt on the clothesline – and then putting white binding on.
I think it would also look nice with a white square in the corner:
So that is what I will do for my third quilt with the white square in the middle of the 9 patches…
I have heaps more ideas, but really, this part is up to you!
Be creative and I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Linking Up Your Photos/Progress
I have been checking out the linky options and so far I have found ones that require subscriptions. I don’t want to pay at this stage, so what I think I will do is just do a roundup post on Friday with links to blogs.
If you would like to share your progress with us, then please let me know in the comments if I can pinch a photo from your blog (or instagram) and link back to you!
If you don’t have a blog and would like to share a pic, please email me with a pic and I’ll include that with your first name only 🙂
I would love to get a bunch of photos of your progress so that we can inspire each other and also visit new blogs… so please do let me know how I can share your versions!
Before I finish up this post, here are some links to videos/tutorials on borders:

Thank You!
Thanks so much for joining me on this QAL! I needed the motivation to get into the sewing room and do something fun.. and I think by the time I finish the borders I will have used up a lot of scraps!
I will be showing you my progress on Friday as well 🙂
In other news….
It’s nearly July……and you know that is one of my favorite months of the year because July means Christmas in July!!!!
I’ll be back here on Wednesday to tell you what my plans are for July!!
Joy-that is a real pretty quilt that you made and I know a couple of my blog readers sewed along with you–I wanted to–but had alot of ‘irons’ in the fire as they say at the time–and I am just now working on having scraps as I do the color of the month each month–some months I have had to order fabric to even do the color of the months–I did not keep alot of fabric when I moved back down here so am having to rebuild my stash–it is coming along nicely and I finally have some to work with–
so maybe the next one you do I can join in–
luv, di
So often the simplest border options are the ones that don’t occur to me! My goal will be to have a post up this week about my version of this mystery quilt. It will be fun to see what everyone has done!
I love how many options and finishes there are Joy – the best sort of QAL, where we can all ut our own spin on it. Have fun finishing your quilts!
What a fun quilt! It’s one that makes you happy because of all the great colours throughout. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else created.
