Trying out the Creative Grids 10 Degree Wedge Ruler

While I haven’t been doing as much sewing as I would like, I have done a bit.. other than making masks of course! In particular I have been playing in the sewing room with the Creative Grids 10 Degree Wedge Ruler..
Remember that nice pile of red and blue fabric I showed you in a recent post?
I told you that it was for a commission….. now I don’t usually take on quilt commissions because they are stressful… but I made an exception for this friend of the family because she is pretty laid back and isn’t going to mind if it’s not 100% perfect…
After agreeing, I did wonder what I had gotten myself into, because this is not just a normal quilt she’s asked me to make, but a ROUND one for her kitchen table…
She had a lovely one another friend made for her, and it was getting a bit worn out:
Isn’t it pretty?!
She said it didn’t need to be the same design, so I hunted high and low all over the internet for a round quilt design that I thought would work…
Do you know how many round quilts there are out there? Not a lot.
I finally decided on using a wedge ruler that I bought in Arabia, but I hadn’t tried out yet. Of course things weren’t that simple – it was too small… !! So, in the end I ordered the Creative Grids 10″ Degree Wedge Ruler (affiliate link):
after watching this video to see how to use it to make it bigger:
Next step in my story is that I was about to start cutting when I suddenly realized that maybe I should wash the fabric… seeing as there was a lot of red in there. I don’t ever wash my fabric, but then I don’t really use a lot of red… and since this was a customer quilt, I thought I’d better wash it all…
I divided it up into groups and put them in with different washes..
I dreamed a few nights ago that even after washing them, the red was dripping all over the quilt…. now you know why I don’t usually do commissions???!!!
After washing, it was ironing and lots of starch since I’d be cutting on the bias…
And finally I got to cutting:
It is easier than I thought to cut the wedges, but I am still going super slow and careful because I am worried about it not sitting flat later. I know that the more accurate I am with each step, the better it will be later.
I also had to futz a little with the length because the fabric was not as wide as the ruler. But I think I managed it ok… I made it a bit shorter at the narrow end, which means I will have a bigger circle in the middle but that should be fine…
It always looks nice when your quilt pieces start piling up… I still have some more to cut, but I’m almost ready to sew… that I hope should be quicker than all this prep work..
Have you ever made one of these quilts, and if so, do you have any tips for me?
What fun! Can’t wait to see what you can make it do! I have that wedge so inspire me! lol
(the round quilt she has is called a Dahlia pattern–it’s been on my bucket list for a long time!)
Joy, I have never made a wedge quilt, but I do have a wedge ruler to make (one day, hopefully!!) a Dresden. It’s not that long though. So it’s been on my list ever since I quilted one for a customer last year. Can’t wait to see what you do with this!! And, I love that dahlia quilt. My grandmother had the most beautiful dahlias in her flower garden and I always think of her when I see one, whether in bloom or quilt! Thanks for the memory!!
No Joy I’ve never made one myself but my DD and a few ladies at Patch have made baby floor rugs with the ruler .. They were gorgeous when done.
Maybe you could make a small dresdans to cover the middle hole. Ladies here just did a circle.
Oh, that dahlia quilt is like the one I’ve got, though mine does fit on top of our bed. I actually enjoyed making it & still have the templates we used in a class I did. I’ve also got a wedge similar to that one, but have only played with it for an apron I designed. Maybe I should get mine out too. Take care & hugs from the east side (giggle).
love the fabrics you have to play with there and looking forward to seeing it done…. have fun…

Hi Joy, Much too complicated for me but it will be beautiful!!! Nancy
Looks good, and look forward to the next stage, see you saturday!
Alas no tips forthcoming from this part of the world but I’ll watch your progress with great interest. I love the design you’re using but it intimidates the daylights out of this non-sane quilter!
