Have you picked your fabric for our Bee Happy Quiltalong? If you haven’t quite decided, that’s ok, we’re going to work with the background fabric today, so you only need to pick one!
I thought we would start nice and easy, to give everyone time to get all their supplies together, which is why today we are just going to cut the plain, in between blocks, for the Bee Happy Quiltalong…
Just a reminder that doing the applique will be much easier if you use the Go! Feathers Die:
If you don’t have it already it would be worth going to your local quilt shop to grab one, or ordering online (affiliate link). Once you have it, you will use it for more than this quiltalong I’m sure!
STEP 1 OF THE BEE HAPPY QUILTALONG
Today we’ll be cutting out FOUR 12 1/2″ squares of background fabric.
If you have a big square ruler you can use it, But I think it is just as easy to use two regular rulers.
I have one that is 6″ and one that is 6 1/2″, so I just put them tightly next to each other and cut like this:
Flip the board around and trim the other edge so you have a perfect 12 1/2″ strip:
Turn the board around and trim off the selvage:
Flip the board around again and cut into a square:
Yes I like to turn my cutting board around a lot – it keeps the fabric nicely in place and helps for a more accurate cut.
Do this twice so that you have FOUR 12 1/2″ squares:
Set aside the leftover bits of the 12 1/2″ strip, we’ll use them later in the quiltalong.
And that is it for today!

I really like your fabrics, Joy!
thanks for the easy start! lol
Hi Joy, I just realized today that the ear things are probably appliqued on and I don’t want to get into that right now as don’t have experience and it would take too much of my energy. It will be a wonderful pretty quilt when you are finished. I did pick up some fall material and plan to make the Hexagon table topper like we did for Christmas only with fall material. Who knows. Maybe I will get it done by next fall. LOL I am trying to accept my limitations. Thanks for sharing. Nancy
I’m not a ‘sane’ quilter but your instructions look like even I could do it. Not going to, but I *could*!
A nice straight forward first step joy!
