Welcome to Step 2 of the Bee Happy Quiltalong!
Like step one, step two of the Bee Happy Quiltalong won’t take too long to make because today we’ll be sewing up the nine patches for the middle of the block…
I thought I’d get stuck into one of Judy’s scrap cases…
I had a lovely time picking out 85 of them…
Don’t worry, we’re only using 25 for this step, the rest are for the applique – but I think I managed to get each one different!
So for step 2, we will be making five 9 patches:
If you’re doing scrappy, you might already have some in your cupboard…
Step 2 of the Bee Happy Quiltalong
You will need:
- Twenty-Five 2 1/2″ squares of scrappy or feature fabric
- Twenty 2 1/2″ squares of background fabric
I did five scrappy blocks for one version of this quilt in the photo above, and then five of the yellow and blue:
For the beginners who are joining in, I’d suggest laying them out as above, and then simply sewing them together. Press to the dark side when you can.
I have tips on pinning and chain sewing in this post from the last quiltalong.
Finished nine patches:
And that is it for this step!
In other news…
In our current stage of restrictions we are allowed to have a “bubble” with one other household…. ours is with my mum and dad…
Dad has been spending lockdown working in his garden, and mum has been doing her cross-stitch.
I took a few pics of her latest project:
Mum’s embroidery is tiny! She uses a magnifying glass lamp, and has a system where she leaves the threads on top until she needs them. This keeps the back of the embroidery neater I think… even thought it looks like a tangle on top right now!
Me? I just don’t have the patience!!! I’ll stick to making easy quilts 🙂

That’s a LOT of 2-1/2″ squares!! Your mom’s cross stitch is beautiful. I used to cross stitch a lot…until I got an embroidery machine! LOL
Beautiful fabric choices! I love what you are doing with these blocks!
