Welcome to Step 6 of the Bee Happy Quiltalong!
How are you going with cutting out your applique shapes and with the candlewicking? Hope those of you who are joining in are having fun!
Today we are going to move on to sewing down the applique pieces.
STEP 6 OF THE BEE HAPPY QUILTALONG- Applique
Applique Stitch to Use For Applique
There are two ways I do raw edge applique.
The first one is just using a short straight stitch and sewing around the shape twice.
The second one, and the one I will be using this time, is the blanket stitch on my sewing machine.
You can also use any decorative stitch for a fun look!
Here is an example of the blanket stitch I’ve used in another project:
Sewing Machine Foot to Use for Applique
I have a Bernina and like to use foot #20 for blanket stitch:
This also a good foot to use for straight stitching so you can see where you are going.
Everyone is different, though, so just have a play with your feet and see which one you like best.
Thread to Use for Applique
I usually like to match my thread with my applique shape:
Sometimes the thread on the spool may look like it is too dark or light, so place the thread over the fabric to get a better idea of if it looks right:
I just discovered I only have ONE type of yellow thread!! Hmmmm.. if I ever managed to go back to Arabia I will have to get some other shades!
And that is it for this step!

I have the blanket stitch on my machine but I rarely use it. For some reason I love working blanket stitch by hand and usually opt to do that. I love how your block is evolving.
