I wasn’t going to post this today, but then I thought I’d better make an introduction to the new quiltalong before it starts tomorrow!
This Quiltalong is based on four of the blocks in the Sewcialites Quiltalong hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop! (affiliate link)
When I heard about the Sewcialites block of the week (aff link), I was intrigued.. but I knew I would never keep up… However, last week I saw block 33… and fell in love… and thought… why not just do a few of the blocks and make a wall hanging….
And then I thought… why not invite others to join in…?
So that is what this quiltalong is going to be – not my blocks, not my designs, just a group of us sewing four blocks from the sewcialites quilt to turn into a wall hanging by the end of June.
The Four Sewcialite Blocks
I have picked out my four favorite blocks so far, all with different skill levels – one is “beginner”, two are “intermediate”, and the last one is “experienced”.
How the SEwcial Quiltalong Will Work
Each Friday this month I will announce the block and link to the pattern and tutorials that go with it. Then we will have the weekend and the rest of the week to sew it!
Fabric Choices – UPDATE!!!!!
We can make these blocks scrappy, use fat quarters that match, or even 10″ squares. We won’t need much to make just four blocks… the largest size of print we will need to cut out is a 2 3/4” x 9 1/2” rectangle (if making the largest block, see next section)
I will be using white as my background fabric, and I have decided to break open this sweet Layer Cake for the prints we will need:
This layer cake has a nice selection of larger and smaller prints… and some plain ones. Of course I will have heaps left over, but that doesn’t matter. I can make some other matching projects.. I’ve had this layer cake for years, and thought I might as well use it!!
Fabric choice Update!!
I changed my mind on which fabric I will use!!!
I started cutting out the first block, and I didn’t have enough to cut the squares out of ONE 10″ square… I could have used another print that had two 10″ squares, but they were directional, and for the first block we don’t want directional.
So I’ve decided to use the same fabric I am using for the Bedding Plants QAL which is this lovely bright set of fat quarters:
I will only be using scraps from these, there will be plenty enough for both quiltalongs.
Block Sizes
There are three block sizes in each pattern – 3″, 6″ and 9″. You can choose which size you make. I will be making the 9″ blocks. (and maybe also the smallest one… 🙂 )
Putting the Blocks Together
I won’t be giving directions on how to put the four blocks together, we will all do our own thing and I think it will be fun to see what everyone comes up with….
So, that’s pretty much it… if I’ve forgotten anything and you have any questions, please ask in the comments and I will reply…
I want this to be a fun, stress free project and I hope you join in with me! See you tomorrow!
Well I’m in……………like I need another project? We should do a meetup once we’ve got it all together for a photo shoot, so if you work out a date for a reveal, I’ll put it on the calendar.
Now off to find some stash fabric for it and ………… oh, a background. How wacky can I go? Thanks, take care, stay safe & hugs.
fun idea – and I love the fabrics you have chosen to use….
Hugz
Sounds good! Meet you at the corner! lol
This looks like it will be great fun for those that take part. I’ll be watching from the sidelines and looking forward to seeing what you do.
Sounds fun. Would have loved to join in but I’ve picked up extra work days for this month 🙁
It’s a fabulous idea, Joy. I often think I should start the year with a favourite bundle of fabrics and as QALs etc are announced, make the blocks I really like from them – all with that same fabric, and who knows what I will have at the end of the year! Having said that, I won’t join you – this time – I’m struggling to find the time for much at the moment. I look forward to seeing what your favourite blocks are!
