A CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG
I’m super excited to be sharing a cute mug rug tutorial with you today!
For this project, I used my Go! Holiday Medley Die (affiliate link)… it’s one of the early dies that Accuquilt put out, so you may have it in your cupboard too… If you aren’t a Go! addict like me, don’t worry, I’ve included a template for a Christmas tree… it’s not as cute as the Go! one, but it will do 🙂
What you Need for the Christmas Tree Mug Rug
One 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle
One 1″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle
One 6 1/2″ square
Six 2 1/2″ squares
Steam-a-Seam (affiliate link) or other iron on adhesive
Ric-Rac (optional)
Scrap of batting around 12″ x 8″
Backing fabric around 12″ x 8″
Scraps of 2 1/4″ strips for binding
Optional: Go! Holiday Medley Die (affiliate link)
CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG STEP 1
Sew the 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangle, the 1”x 6 1/2” rectangle and the 6 1/2”square together as in the diagram below:
CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG STEP 2
Using the 2 1/2″ squares, make 1 of these:
CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG STEP 3
Using the Go! Holiday Medley Die (aff link):
Iron a rectangle of Steam-a-Seam to fit the block just made.
Place it on the Christmas tree shape on the die and put it through the Go! Cutter.
Using the Christmas tree template
Print out the pattern below and trace the tree onto the Steam-a-Seam. Iron it to the back of the block just made and cut it out.
CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG STEP 4
Iron the applique onto the base of the Mug Rug made in step 1
CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG STEP 5
Using your choice of method, applique the tree down. I used a blanket stitch with my machine, and put the batting behind it already. I find the batting helps stabilize it.
Here is the one I did with the Go! die:
Finishing off the CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG
Once you have appliqued the tree, put some backing behind the batting and make a quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired, then trim to a nice rectangular shape 🙂 I’m not giving measurements for this because as you can see one of my mug rug bases above is wonky, so I am just going to trim it up and not stress!
Make some binding with 2 1/4″ strips and bind.
Before I go, I need some advice… I want to add ric rac, but am having trouble deciding whether to use the thick or thin:
Which do you think?
I will be updating this post later in the month with my FINISHED mug rug… I am blaming the fact that I am moving house on it not being quite done…. 🙂
Now for a FUN GIVEAWAY!
I have a challenge for you – using my tutorial, make and finish your mug rug before I do…. and I will give you one of the patterns in my shop (your choice) for free! Just email me a photo of your finished mug rug. (joy at daysfilledwithjoy dot com)

I really like the addition of the ric rac, it gives it sparkle!
So cute, and looks so easy!!
This tree is adorable. Love it and will definitely need to create a few before the holidays but probably not before you.
What fun! There must be something about Christmas trees because I’ve been making them too, only on a larger scale.
Such a cute way to use up some scraps. Thanks for the download.
Lovely & such a clever use of squares for the Xmas tree. Take care & hugs.

Great mug rug, I like both Rick racks. Thanks so much for the template!
It’s so cute, Joy! I’d go with the narrower Ric-Rac, but both are cute! Thanks so much for kicking off the hop with such a fun project!!
Super cute mug rug!! Thanks for sharing with the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop.
What a lovely surprise this mug rug was. I expected it to be hard, but I should have known you’d find the easy way to do it!
