Welcome to day 4 of the Here Comes the Sun Blog Hop hosted by  by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt.
I usually have 101 ideas for blog hops… but this time I was stumped…. maybe it’s because it’s winter here and we haven’t actually seen the sun much lately?
I finally decided I needed to get my act together and see if there was a nice pattern out there that had something to do with the sun 🙂 Use someone else’s creativity instead of mine!
After a little search I found this one that I really liked:
It uses a layer cake and I dug that pretty one out of my stash…
Its called Sun Catcher (affiliate link), and I thought it was quite appropriate for us in Victoria at the moment as we are trying to catch any bit of sun we can!
And I got to work… Pinwheels first:
Surround them with more pretty fabric:
The pattern called for matching fabric, but I only had the layer cake, so I had to make some changes with the middle setting blocks… Instead of one fabric, I used two:
And that is how far I got with the quilt…. because once again the pattern calls for matching fabric, which I don’t have and since it is an old layer cake I can’t actually buy any.
I do however, have a bunch of 10″ squares left from the layer cake, so I thought maybe I could use them. I made pinwheels to match the middle squares, and then trialed 2.5″ strips on the design wall (please ignore the surrounding stuff!):
So now I need help… is it too busy?
I am in two minds… to do the rectangles around it, or just finish it as is with possibly some scrappy binding?
Let me know in the comments what you think, please!
And then go and visit everyone else who is sharing their sunny project today:
Thank you for visiting here today and thank you Carol for another fun blog hop!
Where ever you are in the world, hope you catch some sun!!
I love this, Joy! Personally, I would just go with scrappy binding, but that’s just my opinion!
Gorgeous Joy. I think just a scrappy binding would look good. Hugs,
I really think the rectangles on a border just adds a bit of pizazz to a lovely quilt. The colors are so soft and calming; love it! You are very creative and have inspired me to try something with a layer cake I’ve been hoarding because I am afraid to cut it up!!! Yet it sits awaiting my first steps! LOL
It will look great whatever you decide to do.
I’m not sure & will need to think, though it really is up to you. Put it aside & look at it again after next week. Take care and hugs.
Joy, it will look sweet either way, but my preference is to use those very pretty rectangles around the edge before adding a binding that reads solid, or almost solid. It’s gonna be beautiful !
I love those colors. Have you thought about making 4 more pinwheels and centering them in the middle of the top, bottom and sides, combined with a sashing that would tie in your colors, might be an interesting take? Just a thought. Thanks for sharing and letting us all throw out ideas!
Your quilt is really lovely and I think a scrappy binding would finish it off nicely.
Pretty quilt and fabrics. Those florals are so nice. A scrappy binding would look good.
Definitely finish with that scrappy border, well, either way it is going to be beautiful with that great fabric.
This is a beautiful quilt! I am guilty of having bought a pretty precut without buying yardage. It’s frustrating when I can’t find yardage that matches when I finally get around to sewing something. I think either way will look pretty on the quilt because it has a scrappy look to it. If you do the scrappy border, I’d go with a solid binding. But then again, what do I know! Thanks for sharing, Joy!
What a pretty quilt. That is the problem when you buy layer cakes with no plan in mind, at least for me, when I finally use it I don’t have enough fabric. I have started buying solids to use in those instances because many don’t have many solids. Love the colors of that fabric.
The scrappy border is lovely, but it is more about what you like. Sometimes a project just needs to wait while you think about your options; I’m sure that it will be beautiful!
Lovely quilt. I personally would go with the scrappy border! Thanks so much for sharing!
It’s going to be just gorgeous whatever you do, and done is good;)
I THINK THE BACKGROUND AS A BORDER AND SCRAPPY BINDING IS GOOD ANYTHING ELSE CLASHES. 9REMEMBER JUST MY OPINION.0
So pretty. I’d go with the white border and some scrappy binding.
lovely fabrics for that pretty quilt… I like that design. to be honest I think either will be good… just different. I find it hard imagining finished looks…
Hugz
Lovely! It’s a personal choice as to what you do. Either will be lovely!
Pretty fabrics. Set it out one way and leave it for a day or two then come back change it to your second option and decide which works best for you.
Both options work really well Joy – I personally would do the scrappy border as I like how it would frame the quilt (make the rectangles nice and wide to reduce ‘busy-ness’). A lovely pattern and gorgeous fabric!
It’s hard to tell in pictures, but it looks a little small to me, so I’d add the border and make it a little bigger. Either way will be nice.
Wow, this is so pretty. I’m sure however you decide to finish it, it will be stunning.
What a sweet quilt Joy. Either option works, but it’s your preference that counts. I will confess to being partial to the piano key type border. 😉
I rather like the scraps used for the rectangles in the border but the scrappy binding would be cute, too. What a great name for a quilt, Sun Catcher!. Perfect.
As the others have said, it’s really your choice, but as you asked, I like the piano key border.
I think both options are good (fence sitting is my specialty!) so I suppose it would come down to how much fabric you have and using it up so it’s not lurking in your stash.
Beautiful Quilt!
really like those fabrics…..bit different……..they look good in the quilt………
