I can finally show you some pics of the making, and finishing, of the herringbone wedding quilt for my niece and her husband!
Last week when I was up in Cairns, my niece and her hubby flew up from Brisbane for the celebrations, and I got to give them their wedding quilt!
I had a few issues with this quilt…. it wasn’t a hard one to make, but there were a few challenges.
First up, I asked the young couple to choose the pattern and fabric. They chose a herringbone pattern, and so I went looking for inspiration on the web.
I found this youtube video by Jenny from Missouri Star and then decided to use my 12″ Qube to actually make it instead of using 10″ squares.
The groom likes brown and the bride likes blue, so these were the fabrics they chose:
I did end up adding some more fabrics to it because I underestimated how much fabric I would need…. but by the time we were ready to leave for the wedding, I was still a bit of fabric short. So I left it home and bought more when we went up to Brisbane for the wedding.
Home again I realized I had forgotten to buy more cream… so the young ones went back to the shop, bought some more and sent it down…
So I finally had all (and more than) I needed and got busy again.
Cut more half square triangles:
Saved so much time using my Go!
And once I had enough blocks, tried to lay them out on our bed in some type of random order…
Loki tried to help, but really, he was a bit useless… (shhhhhh don’t tell him I said that!)
Thankfully Dad came around and hung up my two design walls and so the blocks went up there:
I love my design walls!!! This was a big quilt, and they were so helpful.
I made a few mistakes – can you pick them in the photo above?
But not major ones…
My main struggle is to be random. I get obsessed about the colors/fabric not touching, being too close, etc.
I finally told myself to get over it and I got the top ready to quilt..
And then finished and ready to go in the suitcase to go to Cairns:
We arrived before the young couple, so I put it on their bed… and forgot to take a photo…!
After I got home I told my sister to get the two tallest people to hold it up while she took a photo… Now the young groom is very tall… so here is the behind the scenes photo of the holding up of the quilt:
The groom and his father-in-law. lol!!!!!
Last but not least, a photo of the completed quilt:
I’m glad I got the quilt done… and hope the next niece doesn’t get married too soon! I must say I don’t make large quilts very often, I prefer lap size… but I am still happy with how it turned out.
I do like the pattern and wouldn’t mind making another using a layer cake like Jenny did in the video… one day!
Have you made a herringbone quilt?
It’s a beautiful quilt and I’m sure it will be loved for many, many years.
Es muy lindo!! Pero tu gatito es precioso !!! Cariños
What a wonderful wedding gift! I’ve done a couple full-sized quilts and I hate the process so you are to be commended. Well done!
This is a great quilt, Joy…and such a wonderful gift of love for the newlyweds!
It looks beautiful! You did a lovely job, congratulations!
Stunning! Nope, I couldn’t see any mistake! What a beautiful job on this gift! (I liked the behind the scenes photo, too!)
Your pictures don’t come through. Would have loved to see the process of making it and then the finished product.
Fabulous quilt Joy, love it…

Good job Joy, can’t see a mistake, a fantastic gift.
You did a great job! Sometimes what seems so simple at the outset can become very challenging. I’ve recently had to tell myself to quit overthinking a project and just get on with it. No doubt I’ll have to do so again!
Beautiful quilt Joy, and such a lovely wedding gift. I’m glad you got to give it to them in person!
Oh I do like everything about this quilt. Simple yet eye catching pattern. I especially like the cool blues but contrasting with the warm rust that gives it that comfy touch. A great wedding gift!
Oh the quilt looks great Joy……………
well done love the pattern and colours
How lovely is your herringbone quilt, Joy! I think blue and brown are the best of friends, and with cream thrown into the mix…perfect! The young couple will love your beautiful wedding gift to them. A most lively quilt finish!
