These little fabric Christmas Tree Ornaments are super quick and easy to make!
Original post written in July 2022, updated December 2024
I love anything to do with Christmas, so the recent popularity of Christmas in July gives me an extra excuse to play Christmas music, and work on Christmas projects!
Little Fabric Christmas Tree Decorations
The little Christmas trees were a bit fiddly to make (stuffing them took the longest), but other than that they were really quick and easy.
I think they would look cute hung on the Christmas tree or on cupboard door knobs…
And as a decoration on wrapped or unwrapped gifts…
I know if I got a gift with one of them on it, I’d be delighted!
How to Make The Christmas Tree Shape
I have made these Christmas decorations using the GO! Holiday Medley die which is an applique die, but I love the versatility of the GO! dies – being able to use them for more than what they were designed for. So instead of using this die for applique, I decided to use it to make these sweet Christmas ornaments.
If you don’t have this die, I have also provided a template for you to download to use instead. See the link in the materials list.
Using up Scraps
Making these Christmas tree decorations is a great way to use up scraps because it only takes a few pieces of fabric to make one fabric tree. Another plus side of this free pattern is that we are not sewing with right sides together and using a turning tool to turn it right side out – we are just sewing the trees with wrong sides together. I have sewn these fabric Christmas trees using a straight stitch, but for that personal touch, one of the many decorative stitches our sewing machines come with would be pretty.
I made them in various colors and fabrics, using the Lori Holt Cozy Christmas fabric range.
Materials for the Christmas Tree Shape:
- AccuQuilt GO! Big or GO! Fabric Cutter
- AQ55043 GO! Holiday Medley
- AQ55112 GO! Cutting Mat 6” x 12”
OR
Materials Needed for the Rest of the Project:
- Scraps of Christmas Fabric
- A handful of Hobby Fill or other stuffing fibre
- 4 inches of ribbon or ricrac
- Sewing Machine
- Matching Sewing Thread
- General Sewing Tools
Cutting Instructions:
- For one Christmas tree, using AQ55043 GO! Holiday Medley:
- placing the scraps of fabric wrong sides together, cut two trees
OR
If using the template, print it out, cut the template out and trace it onto the wrong side of the fabric. Cut it out.
Sewing Instructions:
All seams are ¼” unless otherwise specified.
- Keep the two tree shapes wrong sides together and start sewing from the base of the tree, about a 1/4” from the edge.
There is no need to follow the shape of the tree exactly, just sew roughly around the edges. (See closeup photo at the end of this post)
- As you get close to the top, fold the ribbon/ricrac in half and place it between the two layers at the top of the tree.
- Sew slowly around the top of the tree, backstitching a few times on top of the ribbon/ricrac to secure it in place.
- Continue sewing around the tree till you reach the bottom of the base on the other side.
- Leave the bottom of the tree open to fill with stuffing fibre.
- Gently fill the tree with fibre, pushing small pieces through to the top and edges of the tree. Using the back of a pencil can be helpful.
- When the tree is filled, take it back to the sewing machine and sew the gap closed.
If you own the GO! Holiday Medley die you can get a printable pattern you can find it on the Accuquilt Australia site. I originally made this project for a blog post on their site.

I have to say that this is one of my most used dies… I also used it for the following projects:
Do you have this die and have you used it a lot? If not, I hope this post inspires you! Remember you can also use the template provided to make the projects above!
Very clever way to use those Acuquilt dies! Those little stuffed trees are adorable!
You have some cute ideas here. I like to add tokens to gifts as well and make Christmas cards for church friends that can be turned into a tree decoration. You’ve given me an idea with the tree.
Those Christmas pretties are so sweet, Joy. How sweet they all are. The fabrics are lovely.
Such cute little Christmas tree ornies! I’m sure anyone would be glad to get one of these as a gift. A thought – you said they were fiddly to stuff, so what if you used a layer (maybe 2) of quilt bat scraps in between the fabric? That way they’re stuffed, but with a whole lot less effort.
Your mug rugs are so pretty! And I LOVE those stuffed Christmas trees – thanks for the links.
