I’m so excited to be sharing my version of the Turnabout Quilt with you – a quilt I made for the Fat Quarter Shop!
Earlier in the year I got an email from the Fat Quarter Shop, inviting me to be one of the bloggers that sew along with them! The invite was to pick one of the quilt patterns they would release later in the year, and they would then send me a voucher to pick some fabric to sew it with.
I was of course so super excited about being invited and quickly said yes 🙂
We got a lot of patterns to choose from, but I picked one that was due later in the year because I knew it would take a bit of time for the fabric to arrive in Australia.
My choice was…
The Turnabout Quilt
Turnabout Quilt Test Block
I thought I’d start with a test block, using a light background fabric like I usually do…
I decided that it was a very doable block and I didn’t have to panic that I’d chosen the “wrong” quilt to make (LOL), and then proceeded to cut out the fabric for the real deal….
I do like the white background, by the way, and will probably make a scrappy version of this quilt at some stage, using this block as well.
Making the turnabout Quilt
I did a lot of chain sewing…
And using Lori Holt’s “Seams So Easy” made it go a lot quicker.
These were all the pieces needed for one block:
and in no time I had all four Turnabout Blocks made up and on the design wall…
I made good use of my design wall when I added the setting stars…
And sashings…
I made the throw size, and it only just fit on one of my design walls!
Finishing the Turnabout Quilt
I totally forgot to take a pic of the quilt on Emmie G… but needless to say, I am so thankful for my long arm and being able to use it to finish quilts. I used one of my favorite pantographs and for a change I didn’t have any trouble with tension of breaking thread 🙂
I always love getting to the trimming and binding stages of a quilt…
And I also enjoy doing the binding by hand… although if I am in a hurry, I will do it on the machine – you can see my tutorial for that here.
I took photos of the quilt at my parents place – it matched their couch perfectly!
The fabrics I used were from Lori Holt’s Cookbook range.
The original pattern used Red and White Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings by Moda, and there will be a kit available for it. It’s not available yet, but you can check it out here and be notified when it is in stock.
I really enjoyed making this quilt. The pattern was clear and well written. The quilt is now on DH’s chair and in use! I’d like to thank the Fat Quarter Shop for inviting me to join in on this sewalong, and I look forward to the next one!
There will be a free pattern for the block and a video on YouTube probably sometime in November. I’ll let you know so you can check it out.
I’m pretty sure I want to make a scrappy one, so I might do that in November when the pattern is released…
That’s it for today, I hope you are having a lovey weekend!

Lovely quilt Joy.
Such a beautiful quilt! Of course I like it even more because it’s blue. I can ‘see’ it done scrappy too and hope you do make it that way at some point.
I really like that and glad they asked you to join in. Take care & hugs.
I love the colors and everything about your Turnabout Quilt! Came out Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!
What a joy to quilt for them! The quilt turned out beautifully and I will look forward to the release of the pattern! Thanks for this post!
Joy what a beautiful quilt, and I LOVE the fabrics you chose! I really like that pattern. Nice tutorial!
Beautiful! And what an honor!
You chose great colors to showcase that design. I look forward to it coming out and might do a scrappy one, too!
Look forward to the release of this pattern. Your quilt is an inspiration.
I was to happy to see your progress start to finish for this new FQ Shop quilt. Yes, please do alert us when the pattern is available. It looks like a relatively easy to make quilt for family or donation.
How cool to be invited to sew for them! Your quilt is gorgeous – I’m not surprised DH has claimed it!
