One of the last nights we were in Holland, we went to a Dutch Pancake House to celebrate my Aunt’s birthday.. .and it was also a nice goodbye meal for us to have together…
We went to this same restaurant last time we were there, I blogged about it here. I think we were there earlier in the day and the lighting was better, because those photos were better.. but the ones I took this time also give you a good idea of what a lovely place it is to eat.
They knew it was my aunt’s birthday and hung up balloons and bandanna bunting over our table!
All the decorations were typically country style Dutch…
Including the ones around a little indoor pond…
There were also chooks up in the rafters!
Thankfully they weren’t real, or else no one would want to sit at the tables below!
The way the menus were displayed were new since last time, and a really good idea, I thought… just a slit in a clog and there you go!
There were till plenty of clogs of different sizes around the restaurant:
Including that giant one next to the teapot!
And speaking of the teapot – you know how much I love teapots – it is a part of a “Boerenbont” tea/dinner set:
which is a typical Dutch country style of pottery. I love the tealight under it too…
In the Netherlands. Boerenbont is just about as popular as Delft Blue, the latter of which is probably more well known overseas.
As they only serve pancakes at “De Smickel“, there are a lot of frypans in a row and more than one chef in the open kitchen where you can watch them being made:
The pancakes are huge! Mine was a cheese, bacon and onion one:
It was delicious, and I took half of it home for lunch the next day!
If you ever get to visit that part of the world, then I highly recommend a visit to De Smickel… I love how cozy and typically Dutch it is.
Designing a Dutch quilt is on my bucket list.. and I know some of the photos I took there will serve as inspiration for it!
I love this post. I can’t wait to show it to my husband. He likes to make pancakes and this is a little special because our daughter-in-law has applied for a job in the Netherlands. What city was this? I also like the nostalgia. I call it nostalgia, but it is probably a way of life.
What a charming place to lunch! I’ve never seen anything like those pancakes! Love the Dutch clogs!
Where in Holland was this pancake house. We were in Eibergen and Enschede near the German border. Our friends live in Lösser. I loved The Hague and visited Holland in miniature, Madurodam. Very fond memories of The Netherlands.
LOvely to tour with you Joy, great photos. That pancake that you had sounds like it was quite low in carbs!?
That place looks lovely! And so does your pancake – who knew that a pancake could be made savoury rather than sweet. I’ve never been a fan of the sweet ones so I suspect I would love the one you had.
Great to see those pictures. Reminders of when my sister and I were in The Netherlands with our husbands and we went to a Pannekoeken restaurant close to Katwijk aan Zee. We also have Pannekoek restaurant here in Calgary that makes those same delicious giant pancakes. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
