Welcome to the Christmas Mystery Quiltalong – a quick, fun quiltalong where we’ll be making a table topper, just in time for Christmas!
Like all my quiltalongs, this one is going to be an easy one… so it is perfect for beginners, but hopefully also some fun for more experienced quilters. It won’t be a big quilt, but a nice little table topper finishing at 30″ square to use this year, or give as a gift.
Proposed Schedule for the Christmas Mystery Quiltalong
Week 1 – today! First Step
Week 2 – Wednesday 30th November – Second step
Week 3 – Wednesday 7th December -Third step
Week 4 – Wednesday 14th December – Final instructions!
Materials Needed for the Christmas Mystery Quiltalong
We’ll be using three fabrics for this QAL. These are the ones I chose:
You will need:
Fabric A – 1/2 yard
Fabric b – 1/2 yard
Background fabric – 1 yard
Choosing the fabric
Try to choose non directional and contrasting fabric. This will make the design stand out more.
For the purposes of our QAL, my green print is Fabric A, and my red print is Fabric B.
Christmas Mystery Week 1 Cutting Instructions
From Fabric A (my green) cut:
- Four (4) 4 1/2″ squares
- Twenty-one (21) 2 1/2″ squares
From the background fabric cut:
- Eight (8) 4 1/2″ squares
- Sixteen (16) 2 1/2″ squares
Set aside all of the 4 1/2″ squares and five (5) of the Fabric A 2 1/2″ squares:
We won’t be using these until a few weeks from now.
Christmas Mystery Week 1 Sewing
This week we will be sewing with the remaining 16 Fabric A and Background Fabric squares:
Christmas Mystery Week 1 Sewing Step 1
Take two 2 1/2″ Fabric A and two 2 1/2″ Background Fabric squares, arrange them into a four patch and sew them together:
Press to the dark side.
Make eight (8) of these four patches:
And that is it for this week!
Any questions, just let me know!
Sweet start!
This is looking intriguing already Joy!
How big will this be when finished? A friend wants to make a baby quilt, and she just had surgery, so I thought this *might* be a good project, spaced out like this. Maybe she can add borders to make it bigger, if needed?
It took me a minute to figure it out, but where you have cutting directions for Fabric A (green) it says ‘Four (4) 4 12″ squares’. I think it should be ‘Four (4) 4 1/2″ squares’ (missing the slash for 1/2).
Looks like fun! Thank you!
Is there a file that we can download to save for later sewing?
Thank you.
