Time to look at a bit of This and That!
Last Week’s This and That
My This and That this week has nothing to do with sewing… but I’m here to introduce you to our new neighbors….!
Yesterday, a cute little house pulled up in the driveway…
We placed it right up near the back fence…
The trailer then went away and brought back another bit to add it to…
My long awaited Chook House!!! And it is fox proof! So no disasters like last time I hope!!
I’m so excited!!
About a month ago, I heard of some Silkies that needed a new home – so DH and I went on a road trip to get them. Since I didn’t have my chook house yet, a friend was minding them… but yesterday it was time to go and pick them up!
These poor hens were two of two thousand that needed rehoming from a chicken farm where they were being bred for meat. I don’t think they had every touched the ground or seen grass….
We put them in the little house with water and some feed – then left them to settle in.
Their names are Belle and Snow – I’m sure you can work out which is which!
After a day in the little house, they still hadn’t ventured out… so I gave them a helping hand…. Once they went down the ramp they really had no idea what to do! We gave them some crusts of bread, which they loved, and they eventually started to scratch around a little bit…
When I went to check on them at dusk, Belle had made her way up the ramp, but poor Snow was pacing under the house, not knowing how to get up. She clearly needed a little help…
If you know anything about Silkies, they aren’t the best egg layers, in that they go clucky a lot. But they are pretty birds and I am planning to let them sit on eggs – they make great mothers.
I will still get some other chickens that are good layers, because I want fresh eggs… but for now we will let Belle and Snow settle in on their own!
This Week’s This and That
Today I did finally started my new job! I think it will be good… but will take up four mornings a week…
I also have a doctor’s and dentist appointment – fun!
I hope I can squeeze some sewing time in there… unless of course I am too “busy” sitting with the chooks and watching them!
Have you got a bit of This and That to share? Then join in!
You don’t need to have your post formatted the same way as I do, but you can if you want… Just link your blog post containing a recap of last week, or the weekend, or your plans for this week…. or any bit of this and that you want to share with us!

Oh Joy, your hen house is just perfect. It looks like it will keep those foxes away. I know you enjoyed just watching them adjust to their new home and lifestyle. I seem to be moving slow this year from day one! My goals are the same every year so I would think I would have a good routine by now, but I don’t. LOL
Has the cost of chicken feed gone up like the price of eggs?
I am enjoying your journey.
They are pretty! I feel sad thinking about the life they had, but you rescued 2 of them! I can’t imagine trying to find homes for 2000! Good job for you, and adorable chicken coop. I didn’t know anything could be made fox proof, but that looks pretty sturdy! And roomy.
So sad that the Silkies didn’t have much of a life pre-Joy times but I’m sure they will settle in soon with your care and attention. So pleased we don’t have foxes to contend with here – my chicken quarters wouldn’t cope with that! Hope your new job goes well – nice that it will still give you time to sew, etc….!
How exciting. I hope they settle soon. A pal of mine rescues chooks every year, she has loads of eggs.
Love the hen house. The silkies are very cute & i’m glad they were rescued & you have given them a home. I’ve been reading/following the rescue of silkie roosters by Edgars Mission. Such a sad story with a happy ending. xx
Pretty little chooks and what a great home for them…
Hugz
Very exciting! I love their new house and yard! You will settle in your new routine in no time just like the chookies! lol
awww – how wonderful that you saved those beautiful birds and provided them with a beautiful home to enjoy. I’d be spending my time watching them too.
Hope you enjoy your new job and that it also allows you time for your creativity. It’s hard to find that balance sometimes.
EnJOYed reading about Belle and Snow. Interesting.
Congrats on new job.
Joy your chicken coop and two Silkies are real treasures to add to your life. What fun you’ll have watching Belle and Snow learn to live in their new environment. Have fun at work. Thanks for hosting the linky.
