There will be no Monday This and That this week because today is the first day of the Sweet on You Sew it- Show it Challenge!
The challenge this month is hosted by the lovely Joan from Moosestash Quilting.. and our prompt was:
Are you sweet on treats?
Are you sweet on stitching a special project?
Are you sweet on, well anything you love?
Share it and let your sweetness inspire us all!
Well, I have a confession to make… I am sweet on hearts… yep, I love hearts! I like to put them in my stitchery projects.. and sewing projects.. and quilts.. and wallhangings…. so that is what I decided to do for this blog hop!
I love the Accuquilt Heart Die, and dug that out for this challenge…
…to make this sweet Pins and Needles Case!
But Wait.. there are some more hearts inside………
I made this Pins and Needles Case for Accuquilt Australia, and will update this blog post with a link to that post once it goes live, so you can download a free pdf of the project. You can check out the other projects I’ve made for them, most with free downloadable pdfs, here!
On to the tutorial….
How to make a Sweet, Hearts, Pins and Needles Case
I was going to call it a needle case to start with… but then I thought, you know what, it is always handy to have some pins as well… hence the name…. 🙂
What you need to Make a Sweet, Hearts, Pins and Needles Case
AQ55029 Go! Heart – 2”, 3”, 4”
Scraps of fabric, batting and felt
Steam-a-Seam or other fusible webbing
Two 8” Pieces of Ribbon
Cutting
Using the Go! Heart die:
- iron some steam a seam to the back of two scraps of fabric and then cut two 2″ hearts for the applique
- using felt, cut one 3″ heart and one 4″ heart
From another scrap of fabric cut two 6″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles
From the batting, cut one 6″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle
Sewing the Sweet Hearts Pins and Needles Case
Step 1
Fold one of the fabric rectangles in half (5 ½” is the height) and position the two 2” applique hearts slightly closer towards the fold to account for the seam allowance later on:
I’ve folded the rectangle in half to show you how to place your hearts… once they are where you want them to be, open the rectangle again to press and applique as desired.
Step 2
Place the appliqued front of the case on top of the batting. Find the centers of the sides and baste the ribbons with an 1/8” seam allowance to hold them in place:
Step 3
Ensuring the ends of the ribbons are away from the sides of the case, place the other rectangle of fabric right sides together with the front. Pin all layers together and stitch, leaving an opening to turn right side out.
Step 4
Trim the corners and then gently turn the case right side out. Press well. Top stitch all around.
Step 5
Position the two felt hearts on the inside of the case. Stitch down the middle through all layers. A different top and bottom color thread can be used if desired:
Add your pins and needles, close and tie a bow!

Where you can get the Go! Hearts die:
So cute and easy! You don’t actually appliqué through it folded, though, right? That’s just for placement of the hearts? I think I’m going to have to make one of these for my sweet Miss R.
Thanks! No that was just for placement 🙂 xx
Well, that is sweet. Thanks for sharing.
