Our project for May’s One Gift A Month Challenge is Bowl Cozies – for soup or other yummy food!
I love, love, love my bowl cozies! And I do use them mostly for soup… The past month I’ve used them nearly every day…. because although it isn’t officially winter yet, it’s been a very cold Autumn!
I am in a tomato soup mood at the moment, and have been making it a few times a week in my Thermie:
I also made chicken noodle soup last week:
I just love popping it in the microwave with the bowl cozy and heating it up. When I take it out, my hands don’t get burnt…
One Gift a Month Project List so far:
January ~ Scrappy Fabric Basket
March – Round Quilted Pot Holders
April – Drawstring Gift Bag With Divider
Soup Bowl Cozies
I actually have a lot of these already cut out in the studio… just waiting for me to sew them up. I know that these are going to make great gifts!
Bowl Cozy Tutorials
There are heaps of bowl cozy tutorials out there.
The first ones I made was from a tutorial by Super Mom – No Cape:
I liked that she used charm packs, that made it a bit different from the rest of the tutorials out there.
The second lot I made from her tutorial were these for a blog hop:
For these I actually made them a bit quicker by making a little template, check that out here!

Making Soup Bowl Cozies A Bit Easier
Templates help bowl cozies sew up a lot quicker.
- You can make a super simple one like I did here
- You can also make a larger cardboard template by tracing around the entire cut out bowl cozy shape
- You can buy a bowl cozy template to trace around
- Use the Accuquilt Go! Bowl Cozy Small Die or Big Die
I have the Go! Big Die and absolutely love it! I cut the fabric AND batting with it. It makes the process so much quicker.
Ok, hopefully you are inspired and will join in on making a bunch of these this month!

I like the idea of these but I’m not sure Resident Chef would be on board. Will have to ask and see!
Nothing like a good bowl of tomato soup (with a grilled cheese sandwich, too!) and served so pretty with the bowl coozie! I bought templates to use–they are very handy!
We’ve had a long cold spring. Days are becoming a bit warmer but our nights are still cool to me and a bowl of soup is still good. The bowl cozies I designed are able to lay flat when I store them in my drawer. They also come in handy has a pot holder or hot pad as well. I like multifunctional items. You idea is a great one for scraps.
