Grab your background fabric and scraps – that’s what we are starting with today!

From the Background Fabric:
Cut 40 2 1/2″ squares
From the scraps:
Cut 40 2 1/2″ squares
Here are mine ready to sew – I’ve got two each of twenty different scrappy fabrics….

Sewing The Christmas In July Mystery Quiltalong Step 1
We’re making four patches… which is pretty straightforward, but in case you are a total beginner, here is how to make one.
Take one scrappy square and sew it to one background square:

I’m chain piecing of course!
Press away from the background fabric:

Make 40 of these pairs.
Take two pairs and place them right sides together, background fabric to scrappy fabric, nesting the seams and sew:

Press and you have your four patch:

Make 20 of these units
