Welcome to Day 1 of the Picnic Party challenge hosted by the lovely Carol from Just Let Me Quilt!
Our challenge was to create something to use for a picnic!
Now about a month ago I was doing some op shopping and came across a picnic basket!
I’ve always wanted to have one like this… and this one is huge!
I love baskets.. DH does not – because they generally are not square and don’t fit in the car properly… so when I came home with this one I wondered what his reaction would be…. 🙂
First of all he said – “did that even fit in your car?!” (only just, lol!) And then he said he was happy for me but it wasn’t going to be going in his car… haha!
Well, I was happy because I scored a huge picnic basket and it didn’t even cost me much… and as a bonus, I got it just in time for this challenge!
My Picnic Party Project
I was going to finish the picnic quilt I made last year for the RSS Summer Sewalong. The top is finished, it just needs to be quilted. That is what my goal was when I signed up.
You would think that I could have done that in the two months we had to get ready. But no, I got distracted with other things.. and then I got some goodies in the mail (remember that big box in this post?).
Well, it was a lovely collection of fabric and I decided to change direction and use some of that collection for my project:
What did I make?
A tablecloth duo and some napkins…
Since my kitchen table is full of sewing machines I decided to borrow DD’s to show my little picnic table setting:
A closer look at the cute fabric:
I like the layering effect two tablecloths of different sizes has… and even better when I turned the big one the other way:
Now you just need to imagine it on a picnic table out in the countryside somewhere…When I go on a picnic next I will take a photo for you!
To make the tablecloths and napkins I just cut squares and hemmed them…
So there you have it, my project for this challenge!
Make sure you visit the others who are sharing today:
Thank you Carol for hosting this for us and to all of you for coming to visit! Now I need to wait for the weather to get better to go on a picnic… 🙂
Your pieces will make for a very stylish picnic!
Love your pretty layered tablecloths and napkins, and how cute is your DD’s kitchen! That is one cool basket, great score! I love baskets too, but they do take up room don’t they? I have fabric in some of mine because I can’t quite give them away. 😉
What a happy table setting and fun way to have a picnic, even an indoors one. Love your picnic basket score!

It looks so nice on your kitchen island!
Beautiful table cloths. Thanks so much for sharing!
Love it! It will be great on your next picnic!
Really fun picnic basket! Glad it fits into your car – could be a great sewing basket too. Lovely fabrics for the tablecloths and napkins.
You can have a picnic in your kitchen everyday with that pretty combination.
What neat fabrics to use. Picnic, picnic…here I come!
I love your table cloth and napkins! Great idea!
Lovely tablecloths and that basket…it’s classic! I thought you were going to line the basket with fabric. I love that basket and wonder where you found it? It just screams for something fun to go in it!
Layering tablecloths is something I frequently do for various reasons. The fabrics you used are lovely especially together. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely tablecloths and napkins. They look so nice on your table. So happy you found that gorgeous picnic basket. Tell you husband it has to be big to pack all the tasty goodies!
Sweet tablecloths and napkins–you will enjoy using them!
Wow, Joy, great idea! I like that basket, too. I bet you get that in his car at some point, though. =) The idea of using your DD’s table was good, and I was going to do that with my friend’s yard or table, but it just didn’t happen, with other issues. Thanks for sharing what you made and how cute it looks!
Cute fabrics! Thanks for sharing. 😊
I love, love, love your basket. It is simply wonderful.
On to your picnic table cloths. the effect of the double layers is amazing and add in the napkins, just summer perfection.
Layered tablecloths! I’ve never seen that before but what a great idea. I am very inspired and make and use cloth napkins so this make a wonderful project. Thanks!
Really pretty table cloth and napkins. That basket is adorable as well. Very picnic-ready.
Those table cloths look so pretty and happy, they have really made me smile.
Pretty fabric and I love your simple project. I agree the layered table cloth look is so fun.
Very cute! And quick – it’s a win-win.
Great find on the picnic basket! My DH hates picnics so we rarely get to go, but I would use that basket for a sewing basket beside my living room chair.
I love your basket and your pretty table cloths and napkins, Joy! Thanks for sharing!
