Welcome to Week 2 of our Christmas in July Mystery Quiltalong!
Today we are going to be using the red fabric and background fabric. We will be cutting squares, drawing lines and sewing half square triangles!
Cutting The Christmas In July Mystery Quiltalong Week 2
From the Background Fabric:
Cut 16 (sixteen) 4″ squares
From the Red Fabric:
Cut 16 (sixteen) 4″ squares
Here are mine ready to go…
Step 1
Draw a diagonal line, from one corner to the other, on the back of all the background squares:
It helps if you use a pencil with a cute saying:
Ok, maybe that quote isn’t quite true… but fabric (and the quote) sure do put a smile on my face!
Step 2
Take one of the background squares and place it right sides together with one of the red squares. Sew 1/4″ on either side of the diagonal line you just drew:
Cut on the line to make two half square triangles:
Press away from the background fabric:
Trim the squares to 3 1/2″:
I used the 3 1/2″ cute cuts ruler by Lori Holt, and even though I didn’t have much to trim, it still neatened it up a lot.
Make 32 of these units
Step 3
Take two of the above half square triangles and place them next to each other like this:
Flip the right unit on top of the left one and sew down the right edge:
So that you end up with this:
Try to get your points to match up better than mine…. but if you can’t, don’t stress.. I’m not! Life is too short to worry about perfectly matched points!
Make 16 of these units
And that is it for this week!
See you next week with the next step.. have fun!
IT looks like fun! I would love to join. I have lots of Christmas fabric too, but I’ll have to sit this one out. I need to finish my July mystery and get some other things done.
I will be watching yours grow though.
Will you be doing a pdf of the mystery quilt a long? Would love to be able to save it!
The intrigue thickens!
Oh, do I ever love that pencil! I don’t suppose it’s available in the US? Thanks for an easy series of steps.
