Cute Fat Quarter Bag
I wanted to add a bag to our gift box this year, and after some searching I came across this one…. it looked pretty quick and easy to make so I gave it a go.
It really didn’t take long to sew up, although I can’t tell you exactly because I was multitasking and doing stuff in the kitchen at the same time. But definitely less than an hour. When I make another one, I will time myself just for fun…
Some thoughts:
- I would use a larger seam allowance next time, I feel like 1/4″ is too narrow and not strong enough
- I didn’t press the seams open, but nested them instead.
- When I sewed the handles on, I went back and forth a few times to make it stronger:
- Last month the pincushion we made was larger than I expected… this bag was smaller than I expected! But I still really like it!
- You don’t need to box the corners if you don’t want to, it is still cute without them boxed. Here is a photo I took before I boxed them:
- This tutorial was interesting in that the bag construction was different from any I had made before. In this one, she sews the top bits first – I always sew the sides first.. (you’ll see what I mean in the tutorial). I think I prefer doing the sides first, but it was good to try something new.
- I also tend to box the corners individually, but again, interesting to do it a different way.

I tried to show the bag size in the photo above – compare to a binder, mug and jelly rolls…
I hope you give this a try, I am certainly going to be making more of these!

What a pretty tote! Nice fabric choices!
Another nice project! I’m sure it could be made in different sizes just by changing the dimensions. Thank you!
Thank you for another fun gift project! I ended up making two bags from three fat quarters that I had on hand.
