Glamping in the Avan

This week has gone quickly, but I still wanted to put up a post about our little glamping adventure last weekend…
Probably like most campers, we started years ago in various styles of tents… then I said I was over tents, so we upgraded to a camper trailer – which was a step up from tents for sure…
Now I was hoping one day we would upgrade to a caravan.. but I didn’t hold high hopes until we were in our late 60’s or so – because DH has always said he didn’t want to tow a big van… but after our last trip with the camper trailer, he decided that at the ripe old age of 53 that he was too old to do the camper trailer and was going to look for a small caravan…. 🙂
Needless to say I was very supportive.. After a lot of research, we found a one owner only, second hand Avan…
Apparently it is still small enough for him not to have to upgrade to a bigger car, which is good, because he loves his car…
Avan Setup
So last weekend we headed off for our first off grid weekend away… at a lake about an hour’s drive away…
The Avan came with this annex, and we put the toilet tent in there…
And that is part of why I am calling it “glamping” – because we don’t need to dig a hole in the sand (see last photo in this post)
Inside of the Avan
We chose this model because unlike most caravans, it has two single beds:
We like this better because I am constantly getting hot and cold at night, and swapping between doona’s, quilts and sheets! It’s ok at home in our king size bed, but in a normal size double it’s a hassle… This way DH doesn’t have to put up with blankets flying around all night in close quarters!
The other side of the van has a lot of bench space:
We have an indoor kitchen and stove! (Glamping!) And plenty of cupboard space… oh and a “real” fridge!
We don’t have a little area to sit with a table, but we can do that in the annex, or by sitting on our beds.
Since it was beautiful weather, we did set up our table and chairs outside… and I enjoyed stitching with a few cups of tea watching the ducks play…
At night we had a camp fire…
Even though I was starting to get sick, I still enjoyed it…
Special Finds
There were lots of birds enjoying the spring weather as well. The grass was covered in these pretty little flowers…
And over there.. on the rocks….
Can you see them?
Let me zoom in a little…
Now you can see!
I wonder how those hexies got there?!
It’s amazing how I seem to find things in nature.. like the pinwheels in the desert… and the pinwheels at the Dead Sea…. 🙂
Well, got to have a bit of fun!
On the way home we passed lots of beautiful fields of canola…
We could see them at the other side of the lake from our campsite… it is just a stunning sea of yellow…
We are very happy with our setup – and it really is fancy compared to what we were used to, hence me calling it glamping instead of camping 🙂 Although it is only a small simple caravan… I think it will do us for a long time!
The couple we bought it from were 79… and finally decided they were too old – so we have a little while to go!
DH has already been adding things to it – a diesel heater, extra battery system and a fancy thing that will let me bring Baby B with me and I’ll be able to sew off grid!
I have some work to do – like matching quilts, doona covers, pillows… all that jazz! But I will wait till he has finished all his DIY – then it will be my turn.
It was a good thing we went last weekend, because today Spring turned right back into winter, with rain and storms and hail forecast. A good weekend to stay home by the wood heater!
Have a lovely weekend everyone, and if you live in Victoria, stay warm!!
How lovely that you have an A frame trailer! Those are popular here, too. Our last trailer was a tent trailer, which was lovely but at that time we lived in Oregon & getting the canvas dry was sometimes a hassle — had to do that between rain storms. Never saw a mini tent for the portapotti before. That’s pretty cool & much better than having one inside. Looks like you had a lovely trip! I lived in Victoria 50 years ago as an exchange student with my host family outside of Melbourne. The loveliest people I’ve ever known — there were many trips back and forth in the next 5 decades on both sides. Thank you for such a lovely blog – I look forward to your posts!
merci de partager ce superbe week end.
Thanks for taking us on your camping trip. It was just my kind of camping….which I used to do and miss it a lot. Just can’t do it alone anymore. Loved it all down to working on hexies.
What a wonderful camping spot! The camper is pretty cool! Thank you
