Nancy Zieman’s Scrappy Peppermint Mug Rug
We haven’t made any mug rugs so far in this challenge, so that’s what we are doing this month!
I looked at heaps of different mug rug tutorials and pattens, and chose this one from Nancy Zieman’s blog because it was more like a coaster… and a bit different from everything else I saw…
I of course changed it up a bit….
Instead of using 4″ squares, I used 2 1.2″ ones that I already had cut out in my scrap box.
I used a mug to make the circle on the interfacing:
Sewed the interfacing to the four patch as instructed:
And sewed the front and back circles of the mug rug together using my 1/4″ foot as a guide..
Once it was finished, I tested it out with a mug…
One thing that was annoying me as I was sewing was that I could see the white interfacing from both sides…
So I decided to make another one using a matching red fabric instead of the white interfacing, in the hopes that it would blend a bit more…
For the back of the coaster I just folded the red fabric right sides together and drew a circle on it with my mug:
and then sewed them together again…
Oh, another thing I did different with both mug rugs was that I didn’t trim all the interfacing or fabric away like in Nancy’s tutorial. I just cut crosses and turned them inside out:
I think using the red fabric instead of the white interfacing made my inner perfectionist a lot happier…
Of course I could have paid more attention to what my quilty pencil was telling me:
You have my permission to repeat to yourself as you make this project:
“A mug rug doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfectly wonderful” 🙂
I am quite happy with the second one… and as I am writing this I am just picturing some pretty crochet edging on both of them – which would of course hide the white interfacing on the first one!
I’ll let you know if I attempt this!
In the meantime, go to the tutorial below and give it a go!

I usually follow the directions exactly the first time and then try my own ideas on the second, too! I go think they both turned out fine! Very festive!
Another really fun project – thank you! Re the crochet edging, I might be tempted to also try a row of buttonhole stitches – even a double row would be fun.
Think of the white lining as cream in a cookie – like an Oreo! 🙂
Those are so cute!!! Nancy Z. had such great sewing ideas!!!
I don’t idolize anyone except God and Jesus, but I have to admit I highly respect Nancy. I watched her every Sat way back in the 80s and learned so much new stuff. So, I eventually bought her books when I found them marked down and just poured over them still learning so much. She directed me to others that taught me a lot especially with the serger. She had a great circle of friends. She seemed a very humble person as well as her friends. It was a hard loss for sewist to lose her. I’m glad we still have her videos, blog and books to refer. Thanks so much for sharing this.
