I’m so excited that our Chookshed Challenge number this month is my Lori Holt Chicken Salad Sew Along!
I was secretly hoping this month would be the chicken salad sewalong because I am in an applique mood and it is a project that I can have in my inside sewing corner to work on a bit every day. It isn’t going to take up a lot of space, and it is in the living area which hopefully will remind me to get busy!
I also feel like the blocks are at the “mindless” stage – all I need to do is change thread colors and sew them down…. it will be nice and relaxing, which is just what I need at the moment.
What is Lori Holt’s Chicken Salad Sewalong?
Well, in case you were wondering, it is not a new challenge… It started at the beginning of 2022… I thought it was a block of the month, silly me.. turns out it was a block of the week!!! And not surprisingly I got behind pretty quickly.
How Far did I get With the Chicken Salad Sewalong?
Although I clearly didn’t get the quilt done in 2022, as you can see from my planning page at the top of this post I have ironed on all the applique bits for all the blocks…
All the blocks have been sitting under a pile of almost finished projects, patiently waiting for me to finish them…
They have all been prepped with some batting behind them, because I like to have that there for stability when I do the raw edge applique…
supplies needed for the Chicken Salad Sew Along!
Thankfully I am at the stage of not needing a lot of supplies for the Chicken Salad Sewalong. The main things needed other than fabric were the Sew Simple Shapes which of course I used when I was tracing the applique shapes.
Now all I need is threads… I had started choosing them and had them in a tin:
I realized I didn’t have enough though, so I checked my thread holder:
(There’s a tutorial here to make this thread holder!)
Even with all those choices I still had to dig up another lot of threads…
After lots o rummaging I think I have enough to get started…
Oh the other thing I needed was empty bobbins – found them in one of my Bernina Barbie Cupboards…
I like to keep bobbins with the threads so that I am not wasting them. I usually put them on the thread board underneath the spool:
Ready to Applique the Chicken Salad Blocks
Now I’m ready for this month’s challenge – got the blocks and threads in my dining room sewing nook ready to go…
Ok, I’m all set! No work tomorrow, so I am planning to pull up a chair and get started on the chookies!
What are you working on this month?
These blocks are very pretty! Your quilt will be beautiful! I can see why you fell behind though, a block a week seems like a lot unless that is the only project you work on. Happy stitching!
I just love those chookies, Joy! Chickens and cows are my jam!!
Those blocks are so, so cute – I can see why you are eager to get started!
Oh I love Chicken quilts and I especially love this one so I can’t wait to see it advance
Have fun sewing your cute chooks. It’s going to be a lovely quilt.
Happy Chicken play … they look fun to applique.
I m SO GLAD I got to see and read this lovely post! I have two patterns from Lori Holt that I need/want to start at some point. I bought the Sew Simple Shapes, but wish to do my applique’ needle turn instead of sewing all the way around the two layers and turning it. Your photos look like the applique’ is laying pretty flat and appears you plan to machine blanket stitch them down. Are you doing it her way or are you using a fusible webbing? I am curious because fusible would make the applique’s 1/4″ larger all the way around because there is no turning under allowance. I am pondering how I want to do mine.
Your planner is to die for! Did you custom order the pages the way you wanted them. I would love to know your secrets.
This is one super cute project! 🙂
It will certainly feel great to get to work on these blocks! Have a good time!
They are the cutest chickens I have ever seen.
These look like such fun! I remember you working on them earlier and thinking they were fun. I love the prints you’re using.
