I noticed the other day that I had lots of lavender on my bush, and thought I’d pick some to make a lavender sachet – or two! I was going to make some of these lavender turnovers but then decided to be a bit more creative and make heart sachets instead…
These cute and easy homemade lavender heart sachets would make great gifts, just make sure to keep some for yourself!
This is already a simple project, but it was made even easier with the Go! Hearts die! No need to trace and cut the hearts yourself – the die cuts them perfectly. I love that I can use the Accuquilt applique dies for more than just applique!
Since this is a great beginner sewing project, it would also be a perfect gift for children to make for Mother’s day later in the year!
What Are Lavender Sachets Used For?
- Hang them in wardrobes to repel bugs and keep clothes smelling sweet
- Put them in with linen, your underwear drawer, and sock drawer, for the same reason
- If you are packing away winter clothes or bedding, pop some lavender sachets in as well
- Having a lavender sachet under your pillow at night is said to help you sleep better
- Hang one in the car as a natural deodorizer
- Toss a sachet in the dryer, and your clothes will come out smelling lovely!
What Kind of Lavender is Needed to Fill the Sachets?
I use English lavender for my sachets, but other varieties can also be used.
Dried lavender is usually recommended to put in lavender sachets. I generally don’t have the patience to wait for it to dry – when I decide to make a sachet, I want to make it now!
So I just use fresh lavender. I have never had a problem with it going moldy, or anything else. However, it would also depend on your climate. I would imagine that things would be different living in a dry place or a humid one. Just try and see what works best for you and where you live!
If you don’t have any fresh or dried lavender available, then you can always use some drops of lavender essential oil. Fill the heart with some hobby fill, or yarn leftovers, and put the essential oil on that.
How to Harvest Lavender
Pick the lavender when the lavender flowers are just starting to bloom. Strip the lavender buds into a bowl, or just on the table like I do, and use them to stuff the sachets. I also pick some leaves to put into the lavender mixture – they smell good and add a bit of bulk in case you don’t have enough buds.
How Long Do Lavender Sachets Last?
The simple answer is years! I made these lavender turnovers way back in 2017, and they still smell beautiful!
What Fabric is Best to Use for Making Lavender Sachets?
You could probably use any pretty material you like, but I prefer to use cotton fabric or linen (natural fibers), only because I use fresh lavender and these fabrics allow the lavender to breathe. Because it is such a small project, it’s a great way to use up your scrap fabric leftover from quilting!
Materials Needed for One Lavender Sachet:
- 4 or 5 stalks of lavender, fresh or dried
- pretty fabric scraps
- Go! Heart die (or heart-shaped template)
- 7″ piece of ribbon or ricrac
- usual sewing supplies ~ sewing machine, pins, etc
How to Make an Easy Lavender Heart Sachet
Step 1
Using the Go! Heart die (or your own template) cut two 4″ hearts out of your fabric scraps.
Step 2
Pin the piece of 7″ ribbon at the top of one of the hearts, wrong side facing up:
Step 3
Place the other heart, wrong sides together, on top of the first heart with ribbon, and pin:
Step 4
Starting at the side of the heart and stitch around it:
Slow down where the ribbon is pinned and pull the pin out to avoid hitting it with the needle. Leave a small opening to fill with lavender:
Step 5
Fill with fresh lavender:
Step 6
Once filled, sew the gap closed, stitching over a few of the existing stitches:
Variations to sewing:
If you are confident, you don’t need to pin the ribbon or ricrac in between the hearts, but simply insert it when you get to the top of the heart:
Then hold it down while you sew over it:
You can also just leave out the ribbon and ricrac if you like, and make a plain heart…
More variations:
- instead of a straight stitch, use a decorative stitch!
- Use pinking shears to give the hearts pinked edges
These heart sachets are so quick and easy to make! I actually ran out of lavender or I would have made more… my sewing room was filled with a beautiful scent of lavender by the end of my sewing session though!

Lucky you to have your own lavender! It is a favorite of mine! I have sachets that are indeed years old and still smell wonderful! Great tutorial!
Lovely idea to use lavender. Bet your clothes smell great with it! And they look so lovely. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss. https://www.inquiringquilter.com/questions/2024/02/14/wednesday-wait-loss-367
Pretty little project but I’ll have to pass on the lavender because it makes me sneeze. I love the scent but it doesn’t like me for some reason.
