Welcome to Day 2 of the Gnome for Thanksgiving Blog Hop hosted by the lovely Joan from MooseStash Quilting!
I love gnomes… so when I saw the topic I decided I “needed” to join in!
I also decided I “needed” to learn how to draw a gnome… because of course I wanted to do an embroidery… so I watched a few tutorials online and came up with this:
Well, that took a bit of trial and error but on the whole I was happy with it… so I printed out the line art part of the design and traced it onto fabric:
And that is when I thought I’d do something a little bit different…. instead of doing it by hand, I thought I might try to do it on the machine – do a bit of thread play!
So I went to my handy dandy thread holder to pick the colors I wanted:
and picked some – notice that for most of the colors I already have the bobbin to match and keep that with the thread on the thread holder…
(Dad made this thread holder for me years ago – here’s more about it and a tutorial on how to make one)
I pinned the design to some batting….
I could have used basting spray, but in the past I have found that the spray turns the white fabric yellow over time, so I am back to pinning it….
I then started coloring the lines with thread, using my 1/4″ foot:
It took a lot of turning, stopping, and starting… and some of the small bits were quite tricky…
This is how far I got:
I still have the pom pom to do, the braids, ribbons, hearts and a few more little bits…
But alas, my wrist was playing up too much and I haven’t quite finished it.
I am planning to turn it into a mini quilt, and I think it is turning out cute enough that I will finish it – but only when my wrist is feeling a bit better.
Like I said, there was a lot of turning of the fabric, which put pressure on my wrist.. if it was straight stitching it wouldn’t have been too bad…

Thank you Joan for hosting this fun hop, and thank you all for visiting!!
What a darling female gnome! I mostly see male gnomes, so when I see a cute female gnome with braids, it is special. You did a fantastic job drawing your own gnome! Turning it into a machine embroidery was even more challenging and I can understand having your wrist hurt. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Your gnome lady embroidery is fantastic! Really nicely done!
That is going to be one cute gnome! Great idea!
She turned out great! The machine stitching is turning out fantastic!
Now how sweet is this little Gnomie girl! What a fun way to play. Love your thread holder your dad made for you. Great idea to keep matching bobbins with the spools as well. All that stitching is a lot of twisting and turning so I hope your wrist recovers soon.
She is a beauty! I love the look and need to try this method. Could it be free motioned to help with less turning? Thanks for sharing this cute gnome, Joy!
Adorable gnome lady! Hope your wrist feels better soon!
Great work on the embroidered gnome. I hope your wrist feels better soon.
Your gnome woman is coming along nicely! Hope that your wrist feels better soon, so you can keep on playing.
Glad you’re creating Joy though still on the mend. Your gnome artwork is gorgeous.
Thanks for sharing 🪡
Once you get the hang of using the machine to embroider, you’ll use it a lot when you’re in a hurry. Besides, it gives you a chance to use those beautiful threads.
I still use a straight stitch foot. I just can’t bring myself to free motion. I’ve tried.
Always enjoy a blog hop.
What a great idea and a good way to challenge yourself! It looks great! (Maybe some free motion quilting will let you keep the fabric facing you so less wrist strain!)
Oh so cute and well done you. Take care & hugs.
your talents never cease to amaze me. Love that you shared your process from beginning to almost end. Wishing a speedy easing of the pain in your wrist.
Your gnome is a cutie! Must say I envy you that thread holders but sadly there’s no room for one in my sewing space. My thread has to hang on the wall.
You did a great job drawing and thread painting this little gnome girl! She is adorable. Take good care of your wrist and let it have a nice break before you finish! Thanks for sharing.
I hope your wrist feels better soon! Your gnome is going to be so very cute! It’ll be nice to see it when you’ve completed her!
Your gnome is adorable .Do you think you would offer it as one of your freebies? I have a 6yr old grandaughter who lives in Sweden.I could see this made into a wall hanging or a pillow. Also i would color it with crayons before stitching it
