I’m so excited to be sewing along with the Fat Quarter Shop next year doing the Vintage Christmas Quilt Along! We will be making Lori Holt’s Vintage Christmas quilt using her new line of fabric – the Home Town Holiday Fabrics.
You know how much I love Christmas, it is my favorite season of the year… and if I can extend that holiday season a bit, I will! I already love to sneak in some more Christmas in July…. just because… and when I was invited to join in on this very vintage Christmas sew-along I immediately said yes, please!
The Fat Quarter Shop sent me the Vintage Christmas Fabric Kit quite some time ago… when my wrist was broken. It’s taken me this long to open it up and get some photos taken to share with you. I’m so thankful for being invited to sew in their quilt alongs, and they are very generous in sending me fabric or kits even though I am not in the United States. Thank you Fat Quarter Shop!
This is the first time I am joining in on one of their block of the months and as I said above, I am so excited!
What is the Vintage Christmas Quilt Along?
The Vintage Christmas Quilt Along is a sew-along hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop. Kimberley is sewing along with us each month – here is her introduction video on the quilt along.
It is a confident beginner-intermediate level pattern. The instructions for each block in the book are great – very clear and concise.
The pattern itself is by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and is a stunning Vintage Christmas Sampler.
The version I will be making with the kit will look more like this:
What do you need to Quilt along with us?
First of all, you need Lori Holt’s Vintage Christmas Book. You can get that here or perhaps in your local quilt shop. I already had a copy because Alice and I have been wanting to make the quilt for a while now! So that was handy!
Of course, you need fabric – while I will be using the kit, you can use whichever fabric you want. Alice hasn’t chosen hers yet, but she will be sewing along with us too… and I hope we can get her blog up and running so that she can share her progress pictures too!
The kit is using Lori’s new Home Town Holiday Fabrics. they are sooo pretty!!! Here is a sneak peek of what is in the kit:
Amongst the other yardage, there are 46 Fat Quarters! Wow, what a range, and all of them are as pretty as each other!
Now one thing I have to say about the Fat Quarter Shop’s kits – they are VERY GENEROUS in the fabric they give. I know I will have a lot of fabric left over… so I will be making some extra projects – like a mug rug with one of the cute blocks or a Christmas tree skirt… I need one of the latter! .
There are also other little bits and pieces we will need, like some ric-rac and cute little buttons.
In short, although it is a large quilt, like all of Lori’s amazing quilts it lends itself perfectly to scraps. You can even use some layer cakes to get a variety of fabrics for the quilt.
When Does the Quiltalong Start and Finish?
We will be starting on the 1st of January – keep an eye out on Instagram because there are others like me who are sewing and posting their versions of the blocks.
We will finish in December when we will assemble the top and hopefully quilt it before Christmas!
Will We Be Making the Whole Quilt or Just a Few Blocks?
We will be making the entire quilt and with over 40 blocks it will take us all year! Isn’t that a wonderful way of keeping Christmas in our hearts throughout the year?
While you can, of course, join in and make the quilt at your own pace, we will be making four blocks each month.
If four blocks are too much, you can make less each month and turn them into a smaller quilt or wall hanging.

Well I think that is all I need to tell you today!
For more info you can check out the Fat Quarter Shop’s Blog Post about it as well as the video I mentioned before.
It being summer here in Australia, I’m going to move Baby B into the kitchen so that I can stitch the first few months worth of little blocks in the cool….
I will be sharing my finished blocks with you at the beginning of each month so stay tuned!
Is anyone else joining us for this quiltalong?
