It’s Spring…. in the northern half of the world… and since we haven’t had a Mystery QAL for a long time, I thought it would be fun to have one now!
I love quilt alongs, they are always so much fun. But lately I haven’t had a lot of time to either run one or participate in one.
I also love mystery quilt patterns, as long as they use scraps, because I need to know that I don’t need to have anything that matches – other than the background if that makes sense. The scraps make up the dark value in the quilt, and the background gives the contrast.
So, back to the QAL itself – I had an quilt design idea in my head and went hunting for my box of 2 1/2″ square scraps… and I didn’t just find one… I found four!!!

My goodness…. I did not realize I had so many!!
I then picked some and started chain sewing…

By the time I finished, I had not made a dent in my four boxes of 2 1/2″ squares…. go figure!!!
But oh well, at least I’ve used up a few in this project….!!!!
Our Spring Mystery Quilt
Here are some Q & A’s about the quilt we will be making…
What is a Mystery Quilt-Along?
It’s basically a fun time where we make a quilt, step by step, a week at a time. We won’t be making a new block each week, but I am going to try to make it so that you will be kept guessing until the end!
What will we be making?
We are making a quilted table topper. I have limited time but want to have something fun to work on, and something new to pop on my kitchen table… so it is going to be small – about 24″ x 24″ without borders. You can make it bigger by adding borders to make it a lap quilt, or larger table topper.
Since we are all using scraps, we will all end up with different quilts!
Scrappy Spring Mystery QAL- What you need
Fabric Requirements
Grab your scraps! You can choose ones that are shades of spring, or completely scrappy.
We will need:
2 1/2″ squares
3″ squares
8 pieces of scraps of about 9″ square (leftover 10″ squares would be perfect)
and
1/4 yard of background fabric
And that is just about it!
Oh, of course, you will need the usual sewing and quilting goodies – sewing machine, rotary cutter, rulers, etc… although we will also add a bit of hand sewing this time!
When are we starting?
We are starting next Tuesday…. and we’ll be going for the whole of April.
The plan is:
Today – Introduction
Tuesday April 8th – Part 1
Wednesday April 16th – Part 2
Wednesday April 23rd- Part 3
Wednesday April 30th- Finishing!
Each week we will be doing a little bit, not too much so that we (I) don’t get overwhelmed…
What else?
I’m sure there are other things I should be telling you about the QAL, but my brain isn’t working well at the moment… so if you have any questions, let me know in the comments and I will answer in the comments as well so that everyone can see 🙂
Oh, there will be a special extra for my lovely members in the QAL, so stay tuned!
See you next Tuesday for step 1!

Sounds like fun!
I’m convinced that using my scrap bins never diminishes them! It’s almost like it fluffs up the leftovers to look like even more. 😀
Sounds like you’ve come up with another fun project! I don’t have scraps of quilting fabrics per se and only have cottons that I use in my landscapes.
Always up for anything scrappy and a Mystery could be fun. It’s a little vague yet, so I will wait and watch patiently. 😊 Or, at least I will try to be patient. Haha
Me too Girl! Me too! All those scraps!
