On with the next steps in our Spring Mystery Quilt Along!
Today we are going to be making half square triangles… yup… this week is probably the most time intensive or fiddly week of the QAL… we can do it!!!
You will need:
- the Twenty (20) 3″ background squares from last week (we already drew a diagonal line on the wrong side of them)
- Twenty (20) 3″ scrappy squares… if you have a stash of these, go grab them, otherwise you will need to cut them.
Step 1
Place a scrappy 3″ square of fabric right sides together with a background 3″ square of fabric and sew 1/4″ on either side of the diagonal line:

I like to place my squares in piles on the sewing machine table, on either side of where I am sewing to make it a bit easier as you can see in the photo above. Then I can just grab one square from either side, place them right sides together, and sew….
I also like to chain sew one side and then flip and do the other side:

You will end up with a nice pile of tangled squares:

Step 2
Now we need to separate them:

And then cut on the line we drew last week to turn them into half square triangles:

You can use a rotary cutter, or scissors to do this, it’s up to you!
Step 3
Next up, pressing them – press away from the background fabric…

Step 4
Now comes the fiddly, tedious part… trimming the half square triangles…

If you are a beginner and don’t know how to trim half square triangles, I am working on a tutorial post, so in the meantime, just sew and press and then by then I should have the post done!!!
I’ve got a lot on my mind at the moment, so if I am not making sense with these instructions, please leave a comment with questions or whatever, and I will answer in the comment section!
See you next Wednesday for the next step!
Happy Sewing!
